Chapter 10 - The True Peace

That evening, after the guests had departed and the summer sky turned into a deep indigo brushed with pink clouds, I sat on the wide stone porch holding my journal.
The house was quiet, but it was a warm, living quiet—filled with the peaceful breathing of two healthy, happy babies sleeping soundly in their nursery upstairs, and the faint rustle of the evening breeze through the ancient oak trees.
My phone chimed softly on the wicker table beside me. It was an email notification from my legal team.
Attached was the final, signed decree of absolute divorce.
I opened the document, reading down to the bottom where the judge’s red seal was stamped cleanly beside my name: LAUREN BENNETT.
No longer Lauren Whitmore. No longer Cole's peace. My own person.
I looked down at my hands. My fingers were bare of diamonds, bare of gold, but for the first time in my life, they felt completely whole.
Cole had thought that taking my money, controlling my movements, and isolating me in a high-rise cage would make him invincible. He had believed that money was the ultimate power.
But he had missed the most fundamental truth: money couldn't buy class, it couldn't buy loyalty, and it could never bring back a woman who had finally learned her own worth.
