Chapter 3 - The Scramble

By noon on Christmas Day, the reality of his situation began to smash through Cole’s arrogance like a sledgehammer.

He was sitting in the quiet dark of the empty penthouse, frantically dialing his firm’s senior partners, his private banker, and even his mother, but no one was giving him answers—only warnings.

His chief financial officer finally called him back at 1:15 PM, his voice laced with panic.

"Cole, what the hell did you do?!" the CFO yelled over the line. "Our primary liquidity pool just locked us out! The Bennett Trust filed a notice of emergency audit with the SEC two hours ago! They're claiming commingling of funds and unauthorized asset transfer!"

Cole stood up, pacing the empty living room, his hands sweating. "That’s impossible! Lauren doesn't even have access to those accounts! She doesn't know the passwords! She’s a housewife, for God’s sake!"

"She didn't need the passwords, you idiot!" the CFO barked. "Her attorney is Arthur Harris! He doesn't ask for passwords; he uses federal court orders! They’ve frozen our operating account! We can't clear payroll tomorrow!"

Cole’s breath hitched. "Listen to me, tell the board it’s a personal domestic dispute. I’ll track Lauren down, I’ll calm her down, and she’ll withdraw the filings—"

"You don't get it, Cole," the CFO interrupted coldly. "A process server just showed up at my home in the Hamptons with a subpoena. If you don't fix this by Monday morning, the board is removing you as CEO."

The call went dead.

Cole dropped his phone onto the couch. His mind was spinning. How had this happened? Lauren was supposed to be weak. She was supposed to be weeping in the kitchen, waiting for him to come back and give her an allowance. She was supposed to be trapped.

He grabbed his keys and ran out of the apartment, heading straight to his garage to get his Porsche. But when he approached his reserved parking spot, two private security guards in black uniforms stepped in front of the vehicle.

"Mr. Whitmore," one of the guards said, holding up a laminated document. "This vehicle was lease-financed under the Bennett Capital Holdings portfolio. As per the asset freeze issued this morning, the vehicle is being impounded."

"This is my car!" Cole screamed, stepping forward aggressively. "Do you know who I am?!"

"We know exactly who you are, sir," the guard replied calmly, stepping into a defensive posture. "And if you take another step forward, we will call the NYPD to execute the temporary restraining order filed against you by Mrs. Bennett."

Cole froze, his face flushed with a terrifying mix of embarrassment and rage. For the first time in his adult life, the velvet rope of privilege had been snapped in his face.
