Chapter 8 - The Ashes

By the time the police arrived, the mansion was a shell. Vane was sitting on the edge of the woods, his coat singed, his face cut. He watched as the paramedics loaded the father and his accomplices into ambulances.

Emer walked toward him, his shirt torn, his hands stained with blood. He held the key to the boat in his hand.

"They're safe," Emer said.

Vane looked at him. There was no pity in his eyes. There was only the look of a man who saw his own reflection in the boy.

"You did well, Emer."

"I don't want the money," Emer said. "I don't want the house. I just want them to be free."

Vane stood up, his legs steady. "They are free. But the world is a dangerous place for free children. You know that better than anyone."
