Chapter 10 - The Locked Door

Five years later.

It was a Sunday. The house was full of noise—a dog barking in the yard, the sound of a piano playing a complex sonata, and the laughter of five young adults sitting around a kitchen table.

Emer walked to the front door. He took a heavy iron key from his pocket and locked the door. Then, he turned the deadbolt.

He stood there for a moment, listening to the silence of a house where no one could get in unless they were invited.

He walked back to the kitchen and sat down with his siblings. Sable was sketching, Ren was reading, Prosper was coding, and Sve was laughing at something the dog had done.

Emer looked at them—really looked at them. They were no longer the broken children from the alley. They were strong, whole, and alive.

He reached out and took Sve’s hand.

"We made it," he whispered.

Sve smiled, a smile that was finally, genuinely hers. "We didn't just make it, Emer. We built it."

Outside, the Chicago wind blew, but it didn't feel cold. It felt like freedom. The machine that had tried to grind them into dust had failed. They had become the only thing they had ever needed to be: a family. And as the sun set over the lake, they realized that the house didn't need to be made of glass to be beautiful. It only needed to be a home where they were loved, where they were safe, and where they were together.
