Chapter 7 - The Hunt

They were in the woods behind the mansion when they heard the shots. The father was screaming, his voice ragged and drunk on power.

Emer stopped. He saw his siblings’ faces—Sable terrified, Prosper shaking, Sve determined.

"Go to the boat," Emer ordered. "The key is under the seat. Get to the island."

"No!" Sve cried.

"I have to finish this," Emer said. He had a knife Vane had given him for emergencies.

He didn't go back to the house. He went to the noise. He found his father standing in the middle of the driveway, a torch in his hand, laughing as the mansion burned.

Emer stepped out of the shadows. He didn't speak. He just moved.

He didn't fight like a child. He fought like a man who had nothing left to lose. He used everything Vane had taught him—the angles, the anticipation, the cold calculation. He took down the two men who were guarding their father, moving with a blur of motion that left them stunned.

Then, he faced the man who had sold them out.

The father looked at Emer and laughed. "You little runt. You think you're a Vane now?"

Emer said nothing. He simply stepped inside the man’s guard and did exactly what Vane had taught him. The father fell, his eyes wide with disbelief as he realized the son he had once beaten was the one who had mastered him.
