Chapter 7 - The Trial of Vanessa Price

In late autumn, the criminal trial of Vanessa Price began at the Manhattan Criminal Court.

The case had captured national media attention, dubbed by tabloids as the "Lobby Assault Trial." Vanessa sat at the defense table dressed in a conservative beige suit, her hair styled neatly, trying desperately to project an image of an innocent victim caught in a high-society misunderstanding.

Her defense team argued that the bucket of water had been knocked over accidentally during an argument and that Vanessa had merely reached out to steady Claire, not yank her hair.

Then, the prosecution called its chief witness: Claire Whitmore.

The courtroom fell into dead silence as the heavy doors opened.

Claire walked down the aisle, seven months pregnant, wearing an elegant dark green dress that accentuated her glowing maternal grace. She walked with quiet, undeniable confidence, flanked by her father who took a seat in the front row of the gallery.

Ethan Caldwell was also sitting in the gallery, three rows back, his eyes locked on Claire with a painful mixture of longing and shame. She did not look at him once.

Claire took the witness stand, placed her hand on the Bible, and swore to tell the truth.

The prosecutor stepped forward. "Ms. Whitmore, please describe what happened on the afternoon of May 12th in the lobby of Caldwell Tower."

Claire spoke clearly and calmly, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. She detailed the exact sequence of events—Vanessa’s taunts, the deliberate grabbing of the mop bucket, the filthy water crashing over her face and pregnant belly, and the terrifying physical pain that followed.

Vanessa’s lawyer stood up for cross-examination, trying to shake her composure.

"Ms. Whitmore," the lawyer began aggressively, "isn't it true that you provoked my client? Isn't it true that you were bitter about signing away your marriage rights and said something to outrage Ms. Price?"

Claire looked directly at the defense attorney, her expression serene and unyielding.

"I signed away hundreds of millions of dollars without asking for a single cent, sir," Claire replied evenly. "I walked out of that building with nothing because my dignity was worth more than the Caldwell fortune. I did not provoke Ms. Price. She attacked me because she thought I was helpless. She thought no one was coming to protect me."

A soft murmur swept through the jury box. Several jurors were nodding in agreement.

The prosecution then played the smoking gun: high-definition security footage retrieved from an internal lobby camera that Ethan’s security team had originally tried to hide. It showed Vanessa clearly grabbing the bucket with both hands, throwing it directly into Claire’s face, and snarling as she yanked her hair.

The verdict took the jury less than forty-five minutes.

"Guilty on all counts," the jury foreman announced.

Judge Miller, presiding over the case, looked down at Vanessa with deep disgust. "Your actions were cruel, calculated, and displayed a complete disregard for human decency and the life of an unborn child. You are sentenced to three years in the State Correctional Facility, without eligibility for early parole."

Vanessa collapsed onto the defense table, screaming and crying hysterically as female court officers cuffed her hands behind her back and led her away to begin her prison sentence.

Claire stood up slowly, accepted her father’s hand, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon air, leaving the ghost of Vanessa Price behind forever.
