Chapter 3 - The Audit

By 8:00 AM the following morning, Ethan Caldwell had not slept a single minute.

He sat at his massive mahogany desk on the top floor of Caldwell Tower, staring blindly at the framed photograph of Claire he had kept on the corner shelf—the one taken during their honeymoon in Maine, before Vanessa Price had entered their lives.

His phone had been ringing incessantly since dawn.

The glass doors of his executive suite slammed open. His father, Charles Caldwell, the founder and Chairman of Caldwell Hospitality Group, stormed into the room, his face flushed red and his blood pressure visibly skyrocketing.

"Ethan! What in God's name happened in the lobby yesterday?!" Charles roared, slamming a newspaper onto the desk.

The front cover of the New York Financial Post featured a high-resolution photo taken by an executive’s phone: Claire, drenched in grey water, held by Harrison Whitmore, while Ethan stood in the background looking paralyzed.

The headline read: CALDWELL HEIR DIVORCES WHITMORE HEIRESS; MISTRESS ATTACKS PREGNANT DAUGHTER OF LOGISTICS TITAN.

"It's... it's a disaster, Dad," Ethan stammered, burying his face in his hands. "Vanessa lied to me. Everything she showed me—the hotel receipts, the photos of Claire—it was all faked. She set Claire up."

"You stupid, arrogant boy!" Charles slammed his fist onto the desk. "You destroyed your marriage over a scheming climber?! But that isn't even the worst of it! Do you know who called me at 6:00 AM today?"

Ethan raised his head slowly. "Harrison Whitmore?"

"Whitmore Rail & Freight's legal team!" Charles yelled, his voice cracking with panic. "They are calling in the forty-million-dollar construction loan on our new flagship hotel in Miami! They found a technical default clause in the contract regarding 'reputational damage to partner entities'! If we don't produce forty million dollars in cash by Friday, they foreclose on the Miami property and seize our liquid reserves!"

Ethan felt as though the floor had dropped out from under him. "Forty million? We don't have that much cash liquidity right now! Everything is tied up in the West Coast expansion!"

"Then you had better fix this!" Charles spat, leaning over the desk until he was inches from Ethan's pale face. "Harrison Whitmore has enough financial power to crush Caldwell Hospitality into dust before the market closes on Friday! Get down on your knees, crawl to that hospital, and beg your ex-wife for forgiveness!"

At that moment, the door opened again.

Four men in dark charcoal suits walked into the office without knocking. Leading them was a sharp-featured woman carrying a leather briefcase.

"Ethan Caldwell?" she asked cleanly.

"Who are you?" Ethan asked, standing up defensively.

"I am Sarah Vance, senior corporate counsel for Whitmore Logistics," she said, placing a stack of legal documents on the desk. "I am serving you with a formal notice of forensic audit. As of midnight, Whitmore Freight has acquired fifty-1 percent of the voting shares in your primary linen and food distribution suppliers."

Ethan stared at her. "What does that mean?"

"It means," Sarah Vance smiled thinly, "that effective immediately, all supply deliveries to every Caldwell Hotel in North America have been suspended due to 'unforeseen operational restructuring.' Your kitchens have no food, your rooms have no clean linens, and your mortgage is due in four days. Have a pleasant morning, Mr. Caldwell."
