Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Vanessa Price sat in her luxury high-rise apartment on the Upper East Side, nervously pouring herself a third glass of mimosa.

The air conditioning was humming, but cold sweat dripped down her neck. Her phone had been blowing up with calls from her father, her public relations manager, and several modeling agencies—all of whom were canceling her contracts one after another.

Suddenly, the electronic lock on her front door beeped, and the heavy door swung open.

Ethan walked in.

He didn't look like the polished, suave billionaire heir she had seduced six months ago. His hair was disheveled, his eyes were bloodshot, and he was still wearing the same crumpled suit from yesterday.

"Ethan!" Vanessa gasped, rushing toward him with forced enthusiasm, trying to wrap her arms around his waist. "Oh thank God you're here! People are saying terrible things about us online! That crazy old man Whitmore is trying to frame me—"

Ethan didn't say a word. He grabbed her by her shoulders and shoved her back onto the white velvet sofa with enough force to spill her drink across the rug.

"Where did you get the photos, Vanessa?" Ethan asked, his voice dead, devoid of any warmth.

Vanessa blinked, her heart pounding. "I... I told you! A private investigator sent them to me because he knew I cared about you—"

Ethan pulled a thick black tablet from his coat pocket and tossed it onto the glass coffee table in front of her.

"My security team spent the last twelve hours analyzing the metadata on those digital photos you gave me," Ethan said, leaning down until his eyes were inches from hers. "They were photoshopped. The hotel receipts were created using a graphic design program on your personal laptop. You paid an actor two thousand dollars to sit next to Claire at a coffee shop so you could take those long-distance pictures."

Vanessa’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. The color drained completely from her face.

"She never cheated on me," Ethan whispered, tears of pure rage and self-loathing spilling over his lashes. "She never sold company secrets. She lived in a small two-bedroom apartment, cooked my meals, supported me when my father threatened to cut me off... and I let you turn me against her."

"Ethan... please," Vanessa whimpered, reaching out with a trembling hand. "I did it because I loved you! She didn't belong in your world! She was boring! I could have helped you build an empire—"

"You destroyed my life," Ethan snarled, backing away as if she were a venomous snake. "And you humiliated a pregnant woman who had never done a single bad thing to you in her entire life."

The door behind Ethan opened again, and two uniformed officers from the New York Police Department stepped into the apartment.

"Vanessa Price?" the lead officer announced, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for felony assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal harassment relating to the incident at Caldwell Tower yesterday."

Vanessa shrieked, backing into the sofa cushions. "What?! You can't arrest me! Ethan, tell them! Tell them it was just a fight!"

"I filed the charges myself," Ethan said coldly, turning his back on her. "And Harrison Whitmore's lawyers are filing a civil lawsuit against you for fifty million dollars in intentional infliction of emotional distress. Enjoy prison, Vanessa."

As the officers dragged the screaming, sobbing woman out of the apartment in handcuffs, Ethan stood alone in the quiet penthouse, feeling the absolute weight of his ruin settle over his soul.
