Chapter 9 - The Family War

"Julian," Clara announced loudly, sweeping into the foyer with an air of aristocratic triumph. "I see Mr. Vance arrived promptly. I told you, family protection is my top priority."
Julian turned slowly to face his sister, his eyes burning with a murderous rage that made even the seasoned family attorneys take a half-step backward.
"You did this," Julian said, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet hiss. "You filed a fraudulent, malicious CPS complaint just to destroy Elise."
"I filed a report to ensure my nieces are safe!" Clara shot back, though a flicker of fear danced in her eyes at Julian's terrifying expression. "A home with a nanny hiding familial criminality is a liability! You are blinded by your pathetic infatuation, Julian!"
"Enough!"
The sharp, authoritative voice didn't come from Julian. It came from Elise.
She stepped forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Julian, her head held high, looking directly at Clara and the state investigator with absolute, unyielding dignity.
"Mrs. Sterling," Elise said, her voice ringing clear across the foyer. "You despise me because I am not from your social class. You believe that because my family faced financial hardship and my brother made a mistake a decade ago, I am somehow unworthy of holding these children."
Clara sneered. "You are a gold-digger trying to latch onto a Caruso dynasty—"
"I am a survivor," Elise interrupted sharply, stepping closer to Clara until the older woman was forced to hold her ground. "I survived a crash that took my baby sister’s life. I worked three jobs to put myself through college while paying off my father’s medical debts. I know what real pain looks like, Mrs. Sterling. And I know what real love looks like. You know neither. You only know status and control."
Clara gasped, turning to Mr. Vance. "See? Look at her insolence! She’s unstable!"
Mr. Vance looked from Clara to Julian, then down at his clipboard, and finally at Elise. As an investigator with fifteen years on the force, he had seen actual abusive caregivers and manipulative opportunists. Elise Navarro possessed none of those markers. Her pulse was steady, her eyes were clear, and her defense was rooted entirely in truth.
Mr. Vance closed his portfolio with a sharp snap.
"Mrs. Sterling," Vance said, his tone turning crisp and professional. "My preliminary assessment of Ashcombe Manor indicates that the infants are thriving, well-nourished, and deeply bonded to Miss Navarro. Furthermore, anonymous tips filed out of personal spite or familial vendettas carry no legal weight."
Clara’s jaw dropped. "Are you refusing to investigate her?!"
"I am closing the file as unfounded and malicious," Vance stated firmly, turning to Julian and extending his hand once more. "My apologies for the intrusion, Mr. Caruso. Have a good afternoon."
As the investigator walked out the door, Julian turned his lethal gaze back toward his sister and her lawyers.

"Get out of my house," Julian said softly. "And if you ever come within a mile of Elise or my daughters again, I will strip you of every trust fund, dividend, and asset tied to the Caruso family name. Do you understand me?"
Clara stared at her brother, realizing with horror that she had completely lost him. Without another word, she grabbed her attorneys by the arm and fled the mansion.
