Chapter 10 - The Dawn We Waited For

The sun had set over Ashcombe Manor, casting a peaceful, indigo twilight across the grounds.

Inside the nursery, the soft yellow lamplight illuminated the room. Maisie and Rosie were fast asleep in their cribs, breathing softly, their faces relaxed and happy.

Julian stood by the window, staring out into the dark gardens, holding a cup of cold tea. He felt a gentle pair of arms wrap around his waist from behind, pressing softly against his back. He turned around, pulling Elise into his embrace, burying his face in her hair.

"Are you alright?" Julian murmured against her temple.

"I am now," Elise whispered, smiling up at him. "Clara is gone. The investigation is closed. And we are still here."

"I'm sorry you had to go through that," Julian said, his voice laced with lingering guilt. "My family put you through hell."

"They put me to the test," Elise corrected gently, taking his face in her hands and tracing his jawline. "And we passed. All of us."

Julian leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of victory, relief, and an enduring, unbreakable love. The darkness that had consumed Ashcombe Manor since Sarah’s death hadn't vanished overnight—grief didn't work that way, and they both knew it. But the shadows no longer ruled the house.

They had replaced the silence with laughter, the fear with trust, and the emptiness with a family forged not by bloodline or aristocratic pedigree, but by the quiet, courageous grace of a girl in a cardigan who knew how to make broken hearts smile again.

And as Julian looked down at Elise, holding her tight against the quiet night, he knew that the morning sun would rise over a house that was finally, truly alive.
