Chapter 2 - The Morning After

The morning sun filtered through the heavy silk drapes of Julian’s private study, casting long, geometric patterns across his mahogany desk. But the usual quiet hum of corporate analysis and algorithmic spreadsheets was interrupted by an unfamiliar sound drifting up from the kitchen below: the faint, cheerful whistling of an old tune, accompanied by the gentle clinking of ceramic mugs.

Julian rubbed his eyes, closing his laptop screen, and walked out to the balcony overlooking the grand foyer.

Down in the massive, marble-tiled kitchen, Elise was moving with practiced efficiency. She had already strapped both twins into their dual-feeding seats, which she had wheeled out into the sunlit breakfast nook. She was humming softly while spooning warm rice cereal mixed with mashed bananas, making airplane noises that caused Maisie to giggle and kick her little legs in delight.

For months, feeding time had been a battlefield of tears, refused bottles, and frantic calls to pediatricians. Watching Elise feed them effortlessly felt like witnessing a magic trick.

"Good morning, Mr. Caruso," Elise said without turning around, her ears apparently finely tuned to the heavy tread of his footsteps on the marble. "Coffee is freshly brewed. Black, with a single drop of honey, right?"

Julian paused, stepping into the kitchen. He leaned against the island, watching her. "You memorized my coffee order after two weeks?"

"I memorize everything that matters," Elise replied simply, setting the empty bowl down and wiping Rosie’s chin with a warm cloth. "How did you sleep?"

"Like a man who spent the night wrestling with his own ghosts," Julian admitted honestly, taking the mug she handed him. The coffee was scalding and perfect. "Elise... about last night. I need to apologize. I’ve been a harsh employer. This house is a fortress, and I’ve treated everyone who crossed these doors like an intruder."

Elise turned around, leaning back against the counter, her expression serious. "You lost your wife, Julian. You’re raising two motherless infants while trying to manage a multi-billion-dollar tech empire. You aren't harsh; you're terrified. There's a difference."

Julian stared at her, struck by her emotional clarity. Most people tiptoed around him, terrified of triggering his legendary temper. Elise stood her ground with the quiet grace of a woman who had weathered her own storms.

"My sister, Clara, is coming by this afternoon," Julian mentioned, changing the subject as a familiar knot of tension tightened in his stomach. "She insists on reviewing the household staff every month. She never approved of my hiring agencies."

Elise’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, though she quickly masked it. "Ah. The formidable Mrs. Sterling. I’ve heard stories about her standards."

"Standards don't begin to cover it," Julian sighed, taking a sip of his coffee. "Clara believes that because she raised two children of her own in high-society luxury, she’s the ultimate authority on infant care. She’ll look for any excuse to find fault with you, Elise. Be prepared."

"I don't rattle easily, Mr. Caruso," Elise said calmly, picking up a rattle to distract Rosie. "Let her look."

Yet, as Julian left for his downtown office an hour later, a lingering sense of unease settled in his chest. Clara Sterling was not a woman who forgave easily, and she viewed the staff at Ashcombe Manor as hired help meant to reflect her family's immaculate social standing. If Clara decided Elise didn't fit the aristocratic mold, she would wage a silent, devastating war to have her removed.
