Chapter 8 - The Federal Verdict

The federal jury deliberated for a mere forty-five minutes.

When the twelve men and women marched back into the courtroom, the silence was absolute.

"Will the defendants please stand and face the jury?" Judge Elizabeth Vance ordered from the bench.

Arthur and Evelyn Vance stood up slowly, holding onto the edge of the defense table for support.

"In the matter of the United States v. Arthur Vance and Evelyn Vance, on Count 1, Federal Service Animal Theft and Endangerment, how do you find?"

"Guilty," the jury foreman declared firmly.

"On Count 2, First-Degree Child Psychological Abuse?"

"Guilty."

"On Count 3, Federal Wire Fraud and Embezzlement of Trust Funds?"

"Guilty on all counts."

Evelyn let out a choked, ragged gasp and collapsed into her chair, burying her face in her hands. Arthur simply closed his eyes, his shoulders slumped in total, irrevocable defeat.

Judge Vance leaned over her bench, her face dark with absolute judicial condemnation.

"Arthur and Evelyn Vance," Judge Vance said, her voice booming through the silent chamber. "You displayed a level of calculated, sadistic cruelty toward an innocent child and a faithful service animal that defies basic human decency. You weaponized wealth, lies, and emotional abuse to enrich yourselves at the expense of your own flesh and blood."

She slammed her heavy oak gavel down with a crack that echoed like thunder.

"Evelyn Vance is hereby sentenced to eighteen years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Arthur Vance is hereby sentenced to twelve years in federal prison. Full restitution of $3.8 million, plus interest, is ordered restored to Maya Vance's trust fund immediately. Court is adjourned."

Federal marshals stepped forward instantly, placing heavy steel chains around Arthur and Evelyn's wrists and ankles, leading them out through the side exit into the dark history of their own making.
