Chapter 5 - The Financial Web

The federal investigation didn't stop at animal cruelty and service animal theft.

When Agent Victoria Vance secured a federal search warrant for Arthur’s study to retrieve the tranquilizer logs, federal auditors discovered four hidden floor safes behind the oak bookcases.

Inside those safes were ledgers revealing a twenty-year financial fraud scheme.

Arthur Vance had been serving as the managing trustee for a multi-million-dollar family trust set up by his late parents. The trust was intended to fund the medical care and education of all grandchildren—including Maya.

Instead, Arthur and Evelyn had been systematically siphoning millions out of Maya’s trust fund to pay for their mansion, luxury European vacations, and the private school tuition of their favored granddaughter, Chloe—my sister-in-law's daughter.

To prevent us from ever discovering that Maya’s trust was being looted, Evelyn had been trying to drive me and Maya out of the family for years, attempting to make us look "unstable" and "unworthy" so we would forfeit our legal claims to the estate.

The night after the arrest, Detective Marcus Reyes from the state financial crimes division sat in our living room, laying out the bank records.

"They didn't just hate your daughter's service dog, Clara," Detective Reyes explained. "Max was trained to assist Maya during her neurological episodes. Every time Max logged a medical event, it was officially recorded in federal medical databases. Those records proved Maya’s condition was genuine, which kept her trust fund legally active and protected from Arthur’s withdrawals."

I squeezed my coffee cup until my knuckles turned white. "So if Max was gone..."

"If Max was gone and Maya suffered a severe breakdown," Reyes finished grimly, "Arthur could declare Maya medically unfit, close her trust account, and pocket the remaining $3.5 million."

It had never been about a dog barking. It had never been about Chloe being afraid.

It was about cold, calculated, financial greed.
