Chapter 2 - The Truth Beneath the Cover

Arthur’s face turned an unsightly shade of pale yellow. He opened his mouth, but for the first time in his arrogant life, no words came out.

"This is absurd!" Evelyn shrieked, stepping between Agent Victoria and the dining table. "It was an unruly beast! My granddaughter—my real granddaughter, Chloe—was terrified of it! We have the right to dispose of pests on our own land!"

"A certified medical service dog is not a pest, Evelyn," Victoria said smoothly, pulling a sleek tablet from her coat. "Max was registered under Federal ID #9942-SA. Tampering with, harming, or killing an active medical service animal is a Class 3 Federal Felony punishable by up to fifteen years in prison."

Victoria looked down at her tablet, then signaled to the tactical officers standing in the foyer. "Forensics team, enter the premises. Secure the kitchen, the garage, and sample everything on that dining table."

Two forensic techs carrying aluminum evidence cases swept past Evelyn. One of them immediately placed a sterile specimen collection bag over the porcelain bowl, sealing it shut while Evelyn screamed in outrage.

"Get your hands off my dinner!" Evelyn yelled, reaching out to grab the technician's arm.

"Touch him again, Evelyn, and I will arrest you right now for obstruction of a federal investigation," Victoria warned, her voice dropping an octave.

While the technicians gathered samples from the kitchen and checked the outdoor incinerator near the garage, Victoria knelt down in front of Maya. The federal agent's hard expression melted into profound tenderness.

"Maya, sweetie," Victoria said softly. "Look at me."

Maya lifted her tear-stained face slowly.

"Is Max’s tracking collar still in the house?" Victoria asked gently.

Maya nodded trembling hands, reached into her pink jacket pocket, and pulled out her smartphone. She opened her medical monitoring app.

A small blue dot was pulsing steadily on the screen.

It wasn't pointing to the kitchen. It wasn't pointing to the incinerator.

It was pulsing from inside Arthur Vance’s locked private study at the far end of the hallway.

I gasped, looking from the phone screen straight at Arthur.

Arthur’s eyes went wide with pure terror.
