Chapter 7 - The Trial of Hearts

The return to the Greenwich estate was vastly different from Nia's first arrival two months earlier.

The iron gates opened smoothly, and the black SUV pulled up the grand driveway under a warm afternoon sun. The bare trees had begun to bloom with green spring leaves, and the gray stone mansion no longer looked like a fortress of grief—it looked like a home.

As soon as the car doors opened, the four boys spilled out onto the lawn, laughing and shouting.

"Look!" Luke yelled, pointing at the green grass. "My bicycle is still here!"

"I'm going to set up the soccer net!" Caleb announced, sprinting toward the garage.

Evan walked over to Nia, holding his laptop case under his arm. Over the past two months, the eleven-year-old had grown taller, his glare replaced by a quiet, mature confidence.

"Nia," Evan said, stopping beside her.

"Yes, Evan?"

"I got the results of my history essay this morning," Evan said, a tiny, proud smile breaking across his face. "Dr. Harrison gave me an A."

Nia pulled the eleven-year-old into a tight, warm hug. "I knew you could do it, Evan! I'm so proud of you!"

Evan hugged her back tightly—a sharp contrast to the boy who had tried to intimidate her on her first day. "Thanks, Nia. For not quitting."

"I told you, Evan," Nia smiled, smoothing his hair back. "I don't quit."

That evening, the estate hosted its first formal family dinner in four years.

The massive dining room, which had once been cold, dark, and silent, was filled with light, flowers, and the delicious aroma of roasted chicken and fresh bread.

Sitting at the head of the table was Adrian, wearing a simple white button-down shirt with the collar open. Beside him sat Nia, with Evan, Caleb, Noah, and Luke sitting around them, eating, talking, and laughing.

Maya was there too, sitting next to Nia, looking healthy and vibrant, her cheeks flushed with color.

"So then Luke tried to paint the dog green!" Noah giggled, pointing a fork at his younger brother.

"It was washable paint!" Luke protested, his mouth full of mashed potatoes. "And Rex liked it!"

Adrian laughed—a deep, booming, beautiful sound that echoed through the dining room, making the four boys freeze for a second in sheer delight. They hadn't heard their father laugh like that in four long years.

Nia looked at Adrian, her heart overflowing with a warmth so powerful it took her breath away.

After dinner, the kids retreated to the family room to watch a movie with Maya.

Nia walked out onto the stone terrace overlooking the estate's sprawling gardens. The night air was cool and crisp, filled with the scent of blooming jasmine.

Footsteps sounded on the stone tiles.

Adrian walked out, carrying a warm wool shawl, which he gently draped around Nia's shoulders.

"Thank you," Nia murmured, wrapping the shawl close.

Adrian stood beside her, leaning his elbows on the stone balustrade, looking out over his property. "Two months ago, I thought my life was over, Nia. I thought I was just waiting out the clock, managing an empire I didn't care about, raising four boys who hated me."

"They never hated you, Adrian," Nia said softly, leaning her shoulder against his arm. "They were just waiting for you to come back to them."

"You brought me back," Adrian turned to face her, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unyielding devotion. "You saved my sons. You saved my soul. And now... I have one more request to make of you."

May you like

Nia looked up at him, her heart thumping wildly. "What request?"

Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
