Chapter 6 - The Dark Alliance

Arthur Lane didn't take defeat lightly. When the corporate pressure failed to move Richard, the old billionaire turned to a darker tactic. He hired Julian Vance, a disgraced former FBI agent who now ran a private black-ops intelligence firm, to dig into Emily Carter’s past.
They spent three days scouring her records, looking for anything they could use to destroy her credibility in court. And what they found was a secret Emily had hidden from everyone—including Richard.
Five years ago, before she became a housekeeper, Emily had been a top financial analyst at a major banking firm in New York. She had been engaged to a man named Thomas Sterling, a rising star in the financial sector. But Thomas had been involved in a massive insider-trading scheme. When the federal investigators closed in, Thomas had framed Emily, planting corporate documents in her personal accounts.
Emily had spent six months in a minimum-security facility before the charges were dropped due to a technicality, but her career was ruined. Her reputation was dead. She had moved to the West Coast, changed her name slightly from Margaret Emily Carter to just Emily, and taken a low-profile job as a maid to escape the shadows of her past.
On Thursday morning, Julian Vance delivered the file to Victoria’s defense attorneys. Within hours, the headlines exploded across the internet.
“FROM CONVICT TO KINGMAKER: BILLIONAIRE'S CHILDREN CONTROLLED BY EX-CON FINANCIAL FRAUDSTER.”
Richard was in the middle of a contract negotiation when his phone blew up with alerts. He opened the articles, his heart freezing as he saw Emily’s old mugshot from New York printed alongside photos of his sons playing in the park.
He drove back to the estate at breakneck speed, his mind spinning. Had she lied to him? Was she using his children as a shield against her own past?
When he burst into the house, he found Emily sitting in the library. She hadn't packed a bag this time. She was sitting by the fireplace, holding a cup of tea, looking perfectly calm despite the storm raging outside the mansion gates.
"Is it true, Emily?" Richard asked, his voice shaking with a mixture of betrayal and exhaustion. "Were you in prison? Did you lie about who you are?"
Emily set her tea down slowly. She looked at Richard, her eyes devoid of fear. "I never lied to you, Richard. You never asked about my resume. You just wanted someone who would clean your floors for fifteen dollars an hour and not talk back. But if you want the truth, I’ll give it to you."

She stood up, walking over to a safe hidden behind a painting of the California coast—a safe Richard didn't even know existed. She tapped in a code, pulled out a thick, leather-bound folder, and dropped it on the table between them.
"I didn't steal that money in New York, Richard," she said, her voice dropping into that sharp, analytical tone she used to wear in boardroom meetings. "I found out who did. And it wasn't just my ex-fiancé. The firm that handled the insider trading? It was a subsidiary of Lane Shipping. Arthur Lane’s company. I was framed because I found the ledger showing how the Lane family laundered fifty million dollars through New York banks. That's why I came here. That's why I took a job in your house—because I knew eventually, Victoria Lane would try to connect her family’s fortune to yours, and I wanted to be here to stop it."
