Chapter 2 - The Blood-Stained Truth

The triplets hit Emily’s legs like three small, desperate meteors, their tiny fingers gripping the fabric of her navy uniform with a strength born of pure terror. Ethan, the oldest by three minutes, buried his face into her waist, his body shaking with deep, ragged sobs. Noah and Liam clung to her sides, their breathing so fast they were practically hyperventilating.

"Miss Emily! Don't let her take us!" Liam shrieked, his voice cracking. "She did it! She did it to us!"

Emily dropped her suitcase. The plastic handle snapped against the pavement, but she didn't care. She dropped to her knees right there on the asphalt of the gated community, pulling all three boys into her arms. Up close, the sight of them made her stomach turn. Their pristine designer clothes were torn to ribbons, stained with dirt and bright, fresh streaks of crimson. Noah’s left arm was gashed from his wrist to his elbow, the blood still oozing, while Ethan’s forehead sported a nasty, swelling bruise.

"Oh my god, babies," Emily whispered, her yellow cleaning gloves instantly staining with their blood as she checked their wounds. "What happened? Who did this to you?"

Richard Hawthorne skidded to a halt five feet away, his chest heaving, his expensive Italian leather shoes scuffed and coated in road dust. His face was entirely drained of color, his jaw slack as he stared at his three sons clinging to the housekeeper he had just humiliated and exiled.

"Ethan... Noah... Liam..." Richard gasped, reaching out a trembling hand. "Come away from her. She's... she's a thief, boys. Come back to the house. The ambulance is on the way."

"NO!" Noah screamed, spinning around to face his father, his tiny chest heaving. He shielded Emily with his small, bleeding arm. "You're wrong, Daddy! She didn't steal anything! The mean lady put the watch in Miss Emily's bag! We saw her!"

Richard froze, the words striking him like a physical blow. "What... what did you say?"

"Victoria did it!" Ethan cried out, his face streaked with tears and dirt. "We were playing hide-and-seek in the closet. We saw Victoria take your watch from the drawer and put it in Miss Emily's backpack. When we told her we saw her, she... she got mad. She said she was going to fix us so we couldn't tell you."

Emily’s heart stopped. She looked up at Richard, whose eyes were wide with a horrifying, dawning comprehension.

"She locked us in the old greenhouse behind the garage," Liam whispered, his voice trembling as he held up his bleeding hands. "She said we were going to go away to a dark place where Daddy would never find us. We had to break the glass with our toys to get out. The sharp glass cut us, Miss Emily. It hurted so bad, but we had to run to you. She’s inside the house... she has a big bottle, and she’s breaking things, Daddy!"

Richard staggered back a step, his hands flying to his head. The entire world—his corporate empire, his absolute confidence in his judgment, his trust in the beautiful woman he had chosen to marry—crumbled into dust in the span of ten seconds. He looked at Emily’s yellow gloves, now covered in his children's blood. He looked at the suitcase he had forced her to pack.

Before he could speak, the heavy iron gates of the Hawthorne estate swung open, and Victoria Lane walked out into the sunlight.
