Chapter 6 - The Lion's Den

The storm had turned Chicago into an eerie, frozen concrete landscape.
By noon, the high-rise towers along Michigan Avenue were shrouded in thick gray fog and falling snow. Outside the massive glass-and-steel headquarters of Vance Medical Logistics, over a dozen news vans were parked, their satellite dishes raised, reporters broadcasting live into the freezing wind.
Julian Croft stood inside the heated, marble-clad lobby of the building, flanked by six private security guards in black tactical suits and three senior board members.
Croft was smiling, reviewing his speech on a tablet. In two hours, the special shareholder meeting would begin, during which the board would vote to declare Marlo Vance legally incapacitated, transfer her voting shares to the foundation, and complete the four-billion-dollar acquisition by Solstice Pharmaceuticals.
Suddenly, a loud commotion erupted outside on the plaza.
A heavy matte-black armored SUV mounted the curb, crushing the decorative snow planters, and came to a dead stop right before the grand revolving glass doors of the lobby.
The news crews gasped, pivoting their cameras toward the vehicle.
"What is this?" Croft snapped, stepping forward as his security team reached for their concealed holsters. "Call the police!"
The heavy driver's side door of the SUV swung open.
Caspian Roark stepped out into the freezing wind, wearing a sharp dark suit, completely ignoring the cameras flashing around him. He walked around to the passenger side, opened the door, and lifted Marlo out into his arms.
She was wearing her mother’s dark navy wool coat, her face calm, holding the silver hard drive visibly against her chest.
"He's here!" a reporter screamed. "That's Caspian Roark! He brought the child!"
Caspian didn't run. He didn't hide. He walked with measured, unshakeable confidence directly through the grand glass doors of Vance Medical, stepping into the warm marble lobby.
Julian Croft’s face twisted into a mask of pure rage. "You arrogant fool," Croft hissed, stepping forward with two security guards. "You brought her right to me. Officers, arrest this man for kidnapping!"
Before the security guards could take a single step, Caspian raised his hand, pointing toward the lobby’s massive video wall—a twenty-foot LED screen that usually displayed company stock tickers and corporate promotional videos.

"I wouldn't do that, Julian," Caspian said, his voice ringing through the echoey lobby like a thunderclap.
Suddenly, the corporate video on the giant screen flickered, went black, and was replaced by a bright blue broadcast feed bearing the seal of the United States Department of Justice.
