Chapter 4 - The Sealed Letter

The quiet of the grand kitchen was broken only by the steady tick of the grandfather clock in the foyer.

Caspian didn't immediately touch the hard drive or the letter. He sat back, watching the young girl who had carried a multi-billion-dollar secret across state lines through freezing snowstorms, disguised as a homeless orphan.

"Open it, Mr. Caspian," Marlo said quietly, pushing the wax-sealed envelope across the marble counter toward him. "Mommy said I was only supposed to give it to someone who didn't ask me for money first."

Caspian looked at her, realizing with a sudden, profound clarity why she had asked if she could work for her dinner at the diner. She had been testing him. Every action, every refusal of comfort, every boundary she had set was a calculated test taught to her by a dying mother who knew the vultures were circling her child.

Caspian picked up a silver letter opener from the mail tray and sliced through the top of the envelope.

Inside was a three-page letter written in a elegant, slanted script that grew visibly shaky toward the final lines.

To whoever holds this letter—and to my brave little Marlo:

If you are reading this, I am already gone, and Julian Croft has executed the final phase of his plan. My name is Eleanor Vance, founder and CEO of Vance Medical Logistics.

Eighteen months ago, my research team developed 'Project Aegis'—a revolutionary non-invasive neurological therapy capable of reversing early-stage cellular degradation. It was the crowning achievement of my life. But when my lead business partner, Julian Croft, discovered its value, he didn't want to release it to the public. He sought to sabotage our clinical trials, freeze the patents, and sell the technology to Solstice Pharmaceuticals—a firm notorious for buying life-saving treatments to bury them and protect their lucrative treatment monopolies.

When I refused to sign over the intellectual property, I fell ill. The doctors called it a rare autoimmune decline. But six weeks ago, I obtained blood samples tested privately outside the country. I was being systematically poisoned with micro-doses of thallium sulfate—administered through the daily vitamin regimen provided by the foundation's private medical staff.

I knew I didn't have long. I encrypted the complete, unredacted clinical data, the patent ownership deeds, and the audio recordings of Julian Croft admitting to the corporate takeover, storing them on the enclosed hard drive.

According to Vance Medical’s original charter, full voting control of the company and all patents automatically revert to my daughter, Marlo, upon her ninth birthday—or to a legally appointed trustee chosen independent of the board.

Julian knows this. He is trying to declare Marlo mentally unfit and place her in an isolated institution overseas until her legal rights can be stripped away.

Whoever you are... protect my daughter. The hard drive key is Marlo's birthdate. Use the evidence to bring them down.

Eleanor Vance.

Caspian’s hand gripped the edge of the marble counter so hard his knuckles turned white.

As a corporate leader, he was no stranger to hard ball, fierce competition, and ruthless tactics. But this was cold-blooded murder, child abuse, and high treason against medicine—all disguised beneath tailored suits and polite legal notices.

Before Caspian could speak, the estate's internal alarm chimed softly.

Marcus rushed into the kitchen, his tactical earpiece buzzing. "Caspian! They aren't waiting for the legal review. Croft just produced a federal bench warrant signed by an Illinois magistrate. State troopers are at the gate right now with a breaching order. They have five minutes before they cut the gate locks."
