Chapter 5 - Escape Through the Whiteout

"They aren't taking her," Caspian said instantly, his voice like iron.
"Caspian, if you fight state troopers on your property, they'll arrest you for obstruction of justice," Marcus warned sharply. "Croft has spun this to the state authorities as a high-profile kidnapping. The media is already broadcasting a break-in report."
"Then we don't fight them here," Caspian snapped, turning to Marlo. "Grab your coat, Marlo. We're leaving."
Marlo didn't panic. She didn't cry. She simply grabbed the dark navy coat, slipped her small arms into the oversized sleeves, and zipped it up tight, hugging the hard drive to her chest.
Caspian led Marlo down the rear service stairs into the subterranean garage beneath the main estate.
Instead of choosing one of his high-end sports cars or executive limousines, Caspian walked directly to a heavily modified, matte-black armored SUV—a vehicle built for extreme terrain and secure transport.
"Marcus," Caspian ordered over his radio as he buckled Marlo into the front passenger seat. "Open the north estate gate—the old service exit leading into the timber trail. Have two decoy sedans head out the main gate toward downtown Milwaukee to draw the police escort."
"Copy that, boss," Marcus replied. "The blizzard is picking up outside. Visibility is down to fifty feet."
"Good," Caspian said, slamming the SUV into drive. "The snow is on our side."
The heavy garage door rolled open, and the armored vehicle roared out into the roaring white wilderness of the estate grounds.
Caspian drove without headlights, relying on the forward thermal imaging screen built into the dashboard. The SUV tore through the deep snow drifts along the private logging path, branches scraping violently against the reinforced steel body.
In the passenger seat, Marlo sat quietly, her small hand reaching out to touch Caspian’s sleeve.
"Are you scared, Mr. Caspian?" she asked softly over the roar of the engine.
Caspian looked at her through the dim cabin light. "I don't get scared, Marlo. I get focused."
"Mommy said the same thing," Marlo smiled faintly, looking out at the whiteout storm. "She said when the storm gets loud, you just have to hold the wheel tighter."
Thirty minutes later, they cleared the private forest trail and merged onto the deserted interstate heading south toward Chicago.
Caspian pressed a button on his encrypted console, dialing Arthur Pendelton—the legendary senior litigator who had dismantled dozens of corporate cartels over his forty-year career.
"Arthur," Caspian said as the connection clicked through.
"Caspian!" Arthur’s booming voice filled the cabin. "Where the hell are you? Julian Croft just held a national press conference claiming you abducted the heiress to Vance Medical!"
"Let him talk," Caspian said coldly. "Arthur, I have Eleanor Vance's private hard drive, her deathbed confession, and forensic proof of corporate homicide. We are driving straight to the United States Attorney’s Office in downtown Chicago."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line.

"Caspian," Arthur warned softly. "If you enter Cook County with that child while that federal warrant is active, Croft’s private security team will be waiting at every federal building in the city. They won't arrest you. They'll create a distraction and take the girl before you ever reach a courtroom floor."
"Then we don't go to a courtroom floor," Caspian said, his eyes narrowing as he checked his rear-view mirror. "We go to the one place Julian Croft can't buy."
