Chapter 9 - Healing the Scars

The transition from corporate titan to full-time father was not seamless, but it was the most rewarding software update Ethan had ever executed.

Six months after the hearing, the limestone mansion in Ladue looked entirely different. The minimalist, sterile furniture had been replaced by soft leather couches, low coffee tables covered in coloring books, and a massive basket of baby toys in the center of the grand living room.

Sadie was enrolled in a local private academy, where her teachers reported she was the top student in her reading group, though she still possessed a quiet, watchful maturity that set her apart from her peers. Emma was walking now, her tiny feet making a frantic, joyous tapping sound against the hardwood floors as she chased the golden retriever through the halls.

One evening, as a gentle summer rain tapped against the large windows of the study, Ethan sat at his desk, reviewing the foundation documents for the Claire Brooks Memorial Clinic Network—a non-profit organization he had funded with fifty million dollars of his own capital to provide free, unmonitored medical care to low-income families across the Midwest.

Sadie walked into the room, wearing pajamas covered in little stars. She didn't stay by the door anymore; she walked straight to his chair, climbing onto his lap with the easy confidence of a child who knew she belonged there.

"What are you working on, Dad?" she asked, looking at the screen.

"Just building something for your mom," Ethan said, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "Something to make sure no other little girls have to run through the rain."

Sadie looked at the logo on the document—a simple, elegant drawing of an umbrella sheltering two small birds. She smiled, leaning her head against his chest, listening to the steady, calm beat of his heart.

"She’d like that," Sadie whispered. "She always said you just needed to see the blueprint."

"I see it now," Ethan said, kissing the top of her head.
