Chapter 5 - The Legal Ambush

The "safe house" was Ethan’s private estate in Ladue—a sprawling, limestone mansion surrounded by ancient oaks and protected by a state-of-the-art security perimeter that connected directly to a private security firm. For a man who lived alone, the house had always felt like a gallery or a museum—impeccable, quiet, and completely devoid of life.

Now, the quiet was replaced by the soft, rhythmic hum of a medical nebulizer and the occasional cry of an eleven-month-old baby exploring a plush guest room carpet.

Sadie hadn't left Emma's side since they arrived. She sat on the edge of the massive king-sized bed, watching Ethan’s housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, prepare a bottle of warm formula with the meticulous care of a grandmother.

"She doesn't talk much, does she?" Mrs. Gable murmured to Ethan as they stood in the hallway.

"She’s been the only adult in her world for six weeks," Ethan said, his eyes fixed on the little girl. "She’s waiting for the other shoe to drop."

The shoe dropped at 2:00 PM.

Marcus Vance arrived at the house, his expression grim. He didn't come alone; he had a team of three junior associates with him, all carrying heavy legal briefcases.

"Voss bypassed the family court," Marcus said, walking into Ethan’s study. "He went straight to a circuit court judge he’s done campaign favors for in the past. They’ve issued an emergency writ of habeas corpus for the immediate return of Emma Voss to her natural father. The police are already on their way here to execute the order, Ethan. If we don't open that gate, they will arrest you for obstruction of justice."

Ethan didn't blink. He inserted the micro-SD card Sadie had given him into a secure reader on his desk. "Did you look at what’s on this drive?"

"We did a preliminary sweep," Marcus said. "It’s everything we suspected, and worse. It doesn't just link Voss to the clinic fraud; it contains recorded phone conversations between Voss and Thomas Grier discussing how they were going to 'silence' Claire if she kept filing reports. It’s a textbook racketeering case."

"Is it enough to override a circuit court writ?" Ethan asked.

"To a clean judge? Yes," Marcus said. "But the police officers at your gate don't have the authority to interpret evidence. They have an order signed by a judge, and they have to enforce it. If Derek Voss is with them, he takes the baby today, Ethan. And once he has her inside his house, that data drive becomes leverage for him to force you into a settlement."

Ethan stood up, walking to the large window that looked out over the long, winding driveway. In the distance, the iron gates were already being approached by two state trooper vehicles, their blue and red lights flashing against the winter trees.

Behind them was a sleek black Mercedes.

"Marcus," Ethan said, his voice entirely flat. "Call the federal district attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri. Tell them we have an active interstate wire fraud and corporate racketeering case involving medical devices. Tell them the primary evidence is currently under threat of destruction by a corrupt local execution order."

"Ethan, that takes hours—"

"Then make it take minutes," Ethan commanded. "I’m going down to the gate."
