Chapter 7 - The Breaking Point

The legal machinery of the federal government moved with massive force once the lever was pulled. Within forty-eight hours, Derek Voss’s assets were frozen, his lawyers were scrambling to negotiate plea deals, and the corrupt circuit court judge who had signed the emergency writ was placed under administrative review.

But inside Ethan’s house, a different kind of crisis was unfolding.

Sadie had collapsed into a high fever the night after Derek’s arrest. The stress, the exhaustion, and the lingering effects of running through the freezing storm had finally broken her small body's defenses. Dr. Vance had returned to the estate, setting up an intravenous drip in the guest room while Emma played quietly on a blanket nearby, completely recovered.

Ethan sat by Sadie’s bedside, holding a cool cloth against her forehead. The man who used to manage three global acquisitions simultaneously hadn't checked his email in thirty-six hours. His board of directors was frantic, but to Ethan, the corporate world felt like a distant, insignificant noise.

"She’s calling for her mom," Mrs. Gable said softly, standing at the door with a tray of broth.

"Mama..." Sadie whispered through her chapped lips, her head moving restlessly against the pillow. "Don't let him sign it... Emma is too little... I can carry her..."

Ethan felt a sharp, physical pain in his throat. He reached out, his large hand gently covering her small, burning fist. "Sadie. Listen to me. You don't have to carry her anymore. You're safe. Derek is gone. I'm here."

Sadie’s eyes flickered open, glassy and unfocused with the fever. She looked at Ethan, her breathing ragged. "Are you... are you the real Ethan Cole?"

"I am," he said, his voice thick with emotion.

"Mama said... she said you were a good man who just forgot to look down," Sadie whispered, her eyelids fluttering closed again. "She said if I found you... you'd remember."

Ethan bowed his head, pressing his forehead against her small hand. The words cut through every defense he had built over thirty-eight years of life. Claire Brooks hadn't hated him for ignoring her; she had understood that he was simply insulated by his wealth, trapped in a boardroom where the screams of the real world couldn't reach him. She had trusted that if the truth actually touched his skin, he would do the right thing.

"I remember," Ethan whispered into the quiet room. "I won't look away again."

By morning, Sadie’s fever broke. She woke up to the smell of fresh pancakes and the sound of Emma laughing as she tried to feed a piece of banana to Ethan's golden retriever, which had been brought from his kennel specifically to entertain the girls.

Sadie sat up, looking around the bright, sun-drenched room. For the first time since she had burst through the emergency room doors, the defensive, hyper-vigilant look in her eyes was missing. She looked like a seven-year-old child waking up from a bad dream.
