Chapter 7 - The Battle for Custody

Two months later, the golden leaves of late autumn covered the grounds of the Franklin County Family Courthouse.
While the criminal case against Victor Vance was proceeding swiftly through the courts, a new, unexpected battle had emerged.
Inside Courtroom 3B, Judge Eleanor Vance (no relation) presided over the permanent adoption hearing for Lily and Emma Miller.
Ethan sat at the petitioner’s table, dressed in a sharp grey suit, flanked by Julian Vance and Marissa. Beside Ethan sat Lily and Emma, wearing matching green dresses, their hair neatly braided.
Opposite them sat a woman named Brenda Miller, accompanied by a cheap, aggressive private attorney.
Brenda Miller was the twins' estranged biological aunt—a woman who had ignored her sister Sarah’s desperate calls for help for five years, but who had suddenly appeared out of nowhere the moment national news outlets reported that Ethan Caldwell was establishing a ten-million-dollar trust fund for the children.
"Your Honor," Brenda’s attorney argued loudly, standing at the podium. "My client is the biological aunt of these children! She is their blood family! Mr. Caldwell may be a billionaire, but he is a complete stranger who has known these girls for less than sixty days! It is against state public policy to deny biological family custody in favor of a wealthy stranger!"
Judge Eleanor Vance leaned forward over her bench, looking at Brenda. "Ms. Miller, where were you six months ago when your sister passed away in the city shelter?"
Brenda pulled out a handkerchief, putting on a show of theatrical sobbing. "Your Honor... I was out of the state... I didn't know! If I had known my precious nieces were sleeping on the streets, I would have taken them in instantly!"
Julian Vance stood up calmly from Ethan’s table. He opened a thick leather binder.
"Your Honor," Julian said smoothly. "Allow me to present into evidence the text message records, bank statements, and voice messages recovered from Sarah Miller’s phone prior to her passing."
Julian tapped a button on his laptop.
An audio message played through the courtroom speakers:
"Brenda, please..." Sarah Miller’s weak, coughing voice rang out. "The girls haven't eaten in two days. I just need two hundred dollars for rent so we don't get evicted. Please, Brenda..."
Followed instantly by Brenda’s recorded voice reply:
"Stop calling me, Sarah! You made your bed, now lie in it. I’m not spending my hard-earned cash on your street rats. Lose my number."
The courtroom went dead silent.
Brenda’s attorney went completely pale, slowly sliding back into his chair. Brenda’s mouth snapped shut, her fake tears vanishing instantly.
Julian turned toward the judge. "Furthermore, Your Honor, financial records show that three weeks ago, Ms. Brenda Miller contacted an online tabloid offering to sell 'exclusive, private family photos' of the twins for fifty thousand dollars."
Judge Vance’s eyes flashed with absolute disgust. She didn't even hesitate. She slammed her gavel down onto the wooden block with a loud, resounding crack.
"Ms. Brenda Miller," Judge Vance declared, her voice ringing through the room, "your petition for custody is hereby denied with prejudice. Furthermore, I am referring your actions to the district attorney’s office for investigation regarding extortion and attempt to defraud a child trust."
She turned her gaze toward Ethan, her expression softening into a warm, deeply respectful smile.
"Mr. Ethan Caldwell," the judge said, "the state of Ohio finds you to be an exemplary guardian. I take immense joy in officially signing the final adoption decree today. Lily and Emma are, from this moment forward, legally and permanently your daughters."

Emma let out a tiny gasp, looking up at Ethan. "Daughters?"
Ethan looked down at them, tears shining in his eyes, his heart fuller than it had ever been in his entire life. "Yes, sweetie. You're my daughters now."
