Chapter 3 - The Lobby Press Conference

At 3:00 PM, the main lobby of Columbus General Hospital looked like a political battlefield. Over forty news cameras were tripod-mounted across the marble floor. Bright halogen lights beamed against the central podium.
The crowd of reporters was buzzing. Rumors had been circulating for hours that Ethan Caldwell had suffered a fatal stroke, or that his company’s stock was about to plummet due to executive incapacity.
At 3:05 PM, the private elevators opened.
Ethan Caldwell stepped out. He was not in a wheelchair. He was wearing a dark charcoal suit—a fresh one—his tie perfectly knotted, his hair combed back, though his pale skin still showed the physical toll of his ordeal.
Beside him walked Marissa, and on his left, holding his hand with fierce tenacity, was Lily. On Marissa’s right was Emma. Both girls were dressed in neat, clean navy-blue coats that Marissa had her assistant purchase from a high-end boutique an hour earlier.
The camera flashes exploded like a barrage of fireworks. Reporters instantly began shouting over one another.
"Mr. Caldwell! Are you pressing charges against the children?" "Ethan! What was stolen from your person in Linden Park?" "Is it true the girls are homeless street scammers?"
Ethan stood at the podium. He didn't wait for the noise to die down. He adjusted the microphone, leaned forward, and looked directly into the central camera lens of Channel 6.
"Six hours ago," Ethan began, his voice echoing off the tall glass walls of the lobby, "I collapsed in Linden Park due to a severe, sudden cardiac event. I was dying. My heart was failing."
He paused, letting his icy gaze sweep across the sea of reporters.
"For twelve minutes, dozens of grown adults walked past me. Some filmed me. Some laughed. One woman called me a drunk. Not one single adult offered help. Not one touched me to check for a pulse."
A uncomfortable rustle passed through the crowd of journalists.
"Except for these two young ladies," Ethan continued, placing his hands gently on Lily and Emma’s shoulders. "Lily Miller, age eight, and Emma Miller, age eight. While the rest of this city treated me like trash on the pavement, Lily searched my jacket to find my emergency medication—medication she recognized because she watched her late mother suffer from a similar condition. Emma used a cracked phone with a shattered screen to call emergency services."
Ethan leaned closer to the microphones, his tone dropping into a deadly, razor-sharp whisper.
"The video that circulated online today—the cropped, edited video that branded these children as street thieves—was a disgusting piece of malicious propaganda created by cowards. And to those who posted it, to those who commented vile things about these orphans, I have a message."
He raised his hand, pointing a single finger at the Channel 6 news crew.
"My legal team has already filed federal defamation lawsuits against the sixteen most prominent accounts that propagated this fake news story. We are seeking damages in the amount of fifty million dollars. Every single penny recovered from these lawsuits will be used to establish the Sarah Miller Foundation for Homeless Children."
The lobby went dead quiet. Nobody shouted questions. Nobody clicked camera shutters.

"These girls didn't steal from me," Ethan concluded, reaching down and lifting Lily into his left arm while holding Emma’s hand with his right. "They saved my life. And as of two hours ago, a family court judge signed an emergency order granting me full temporary custody. They are under my protection now. If anyone in this city so much as breathes a harmful word toward them again, they will answer directly to me and the full weight of Caldwell Enterprises."
Without taking a single question, Ethan turned his back on the media storm and guided the girls back toward the private elevators, leaving the room in stunned, breathless silence.
