Chapter 5 - Shadows from the Past

By the end of their first week at Caldwell Manor, Lily and Emma were slowly beginning to transform. The dark circles under their eyes were fading, their pale cheeks filling out from regular, nutritious meals.
Yet, night brought its own terrors.
At 2:00 AM, Ethan was sitting in his home study, reviewing legal briefs by the warm glow of a desk lamp, when he heard soft, hesitant footsteps in the corridor.
He stood up and opened the heavy door.
Standing in the hallway was Lily. She was wearing pink flannel pajamas, clutching a plush brown bear, her feet bare against the cold floorboards.
"Lily?" Ethan called out softly, kneeling down. "What's wrong, sweetie? Did you have a nightmare?"
Lily shook her head, looking at the floor. "Emma is asleep. But... I heard a noise outside."
"It's just the wind in the oak trees," Ethan reassured her gently. "This house is very safe, Lily. We have gates, security guards, and alarm systems."
Lily stepped closer, looking up at him with eyes that were far too old for an eight-year-old child. "Before Mom died... she told us that rich people only help when they want something back. What do you want from us, Mr. Caldwell?"
Ethan stared at her, stunned by the blunt, painful honesty of her question. He sat down directly on the hallway floor, folding his legs, inviting her to sit beside him. She hesitated, then sat down on his knee blanket.
"Your mom was trying to protect you, Lily," Ethan said, choosing his words with extreme care. "And she was right to warn you. A lot of wealthy people are selfish. They view everything as a transaction."
He pointed to his chest, right over his heart, where a faint surgical scar sat beneath his shirt.
"When I collapsed in that park, I had millions of dollars in my bank account. I had expensive cars, big houses, and powerful friends. But none of those things could give me oxygen. None of those things could make my heart beat."
He touched Lily’s tiny forehead gently.
"You and Emma gave me my life back. You didn't do it for money. You didn't do it because I was rich—you didn't even know who I was. You did it because you have good, brave hearts. I don't want anything from you, Lily. My job now is simply to give you the safe home your mother wanted you to have."
Lily stared at him for a long, quiet moment. Then, slowly, she unrolled her small fingers and placed something into Ethan’s palm.
It was the small, silver nitro-glycerin pill case from the park. She had kept it in her pocket the entire time.
"I saved it," she whispered. "In case your heart hurts again."
Ethan closed his fingers around the cold silver case, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "Thank you, Lily. I’ll keep it right here on my desk."
Suddenly, the house alarm panel near the entrance chimed softly, flashing a yellow warning light: PERIMETER SENSOR 4 — MOTION DETECTED.
Ethan’s posture instantly shifted. He stood up, picked Lily up in his arms, and walked quickly back toward the guest suite where Emma was sleeping.

"Marissa!" Ethan called out sharply down the hall as he placed Lily inside the room and locked the door from the outside.
Marissa emerged from her room wearing a silk robe, holding a security tablet. "The south gate camera just got cut, Ethan. Someone just breached the lower drive."
