Chapter 7 - The Legacy Unleashed

A year later.
The grand auditorium at the University of Washington was packed to capacity for the inauguration of the Elizabeth & Clara Winters Pediatric Research Center—a state-of-the-art facility built entirely through Maxwell’s new foundation.
Scientists, medical experts, local leaders, and community members filled the seating rows.
Maxwell stood backstage, wearing a dark gray suit. Standing beside him were nine-year-old Lucy and Lily, both wearing simple, beautiful navy dresses.
"Are you nervous, Grandpa?" Lily asked, holding his hand tightly.
"Not at all," Maxwell smiled down at her. "Because I'm not giving the opening speech today."
Lucy looked up, her dark gray eyes sparkling with quiet excitement. "I have my notes ready."
The auditorium lights dimmed, and the master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the speaker announced, "please welcome the co-founders of the Winters Foundation, Lucy and Lily Winters-Rothschild, along with Mr. Maxwell Rothschild."
The applause echoed loudly through the hall as the three of them walked out onto the brightly lit stage.
Lucy stepped up to the wooden podium, adjusting the microphone down to her height with complete confidence. She opened her small black notebook and looked out at the massive audience.
"Four years ago," Lucy began, her voice clear, strong, and echoing through the speakers, "my sister and I walked the rain-soaked streets of Seattle collecting coins in a paper cup to buy medication for our grandmother. We thought forty-five cents could save a life."
The audience went entirely silent, captivated by the young girl’s composure.
"We learned that money alone cannot stop disease," Lucy continued, looking back at Maxwell, who stood proudly behind her. "But love, combined with purpose, can change everything. This center is built so that no child ever has to stand under an awning in the rain asking for help again."
The auditorium erupted into a thunderous standing ovation. Prominent doctors, researchers, and city leaders rose to their feet, cheering for the nine-year-old girl whose courage had sparked a movement.

Maxwell felt tears hit his eyes. He stepped forward, putting his arms around both Lucy and Lily as the crowd applauded.
In that moment, looking out at the sea of hopeful faces, Maxwell knew that the dark shadow of the past was gone. Elizabeth’s sacrifice and Clara’s memory had not been in vain.
