Chapter 5 - The Final Farewell

By 3:00 PM that afternoon, the sun had broken through the heavy Seattle rain clouds, casting a warm, amber light across the private suite at Rainier Memorial Hospital.

Maxwell had arranged for Elizabeth to be moved to the hospital’s top-floor hospice suite, surrounded by fresh yellow roses—her favorite flowers from thirty years ago.

The room was silent save for the soft, slow breathing of the dying woman.

Dr. Thorne stepped outside, giving the family their final privacy. "It will be very soon now, Maxwell."

Maxwell sat on the edge of the bed, holding Elizabeth’s right hand, while Lucy and Lily sat on the left, holding her small fingers.

Elizabeth opened her eyes slowly. The pain was gone, managed completely by the medical team, leaving her gaze remarkably clear and serene.

She looked at Maxwell, her lips curving into a faint, soft smile.

"You look like you did at nineteen," she whispered rasply. "Standing by the train station."

"I'm sorry I was thirty years late, Elizabeth," Maxwell choked out, bringing her hand to his lips and pressing a soft kiss against her skin. "I'm so sorry."

"You weren't late," she murmured, her eyes shifting to Lucy and Lily. "You arrived right on time... to take them home."

She looked at the twins, her breathing growing slower, spaced further apart.

"Lucy... Lily..." Elizabeth whispered. "Be good to your grandfather. He’s... he’s a smart man."

"We will, Grandma," Lily wept softly, leaning down to press her cheek against Elizabeth’s arm. "We love you."

"I love you... to the moon and back," Elizabeth murmured.

She turned her eyes back to Maxwell. One final, deep breath expanded her chest.

"Maxwell..." she breathed.

"I'm here, my love," he whispered.

"Thank you."

The breath released softly, like a sigh of long-awaited rest. The chest stayed still. The monitor behind her maintained a soft, gentle flatline, signaling a peaceful passage.

Maxwell bowed his head, holding her hand tight against his face as tears fell freely onto the white sheets.

May you like

Lucy and Lily leaned against his shoulders, weeping quietly into his coat.

In that quiet room, surrounded by yellow roses and the warm afternoon sun, the thirty-year nightmare of separation finally came to an end. Elizabeth was gone, but her legacy—and the love she had guarded so fiercely—was safe in the arms of the man who had found her at last.
