Chapter 6 - The Rebuilding

Three months passed.
The corporate storm that had swept through Seattle following Maxwell Rothschild’s dramatic restructuring of Rothschild Technologies had finally settled into a quiet, orderly reality.
Maxwell had fulfilled his promise to his mother. He had executed a full legal and financial severance from Eleanor’s holding company, creating a new private entity named Winters-Rothschild Holdings, dedicated entirely to pediatric medical research and public education funding. Eleanor remained isolated on her Mercer Island estate, stripped of her corporate influence, surrounded only by her empty riches.
Meanwhile, Maxwell had purchased a warm, light-filled craftsman estate in the historic district of Queen Anne, overlooking Puget Sound.
The house was nothing like the cold stone castle on Mercer Island. It was filled with tall windows, high ceilings, large wooden tables, and an expansive sunroom overlooking a garden filled with yellow rose bushes.
It was a Saturday morning, and the smell of fresh blueberry pancakes filled the kitchen.
Maxwell stood at the island counter wearing a comfortable wool sweater and jeans—a stark contrast to the rigid corporate suits he had worn for thirty years.
Lucy sat at the counter, her laptop open, reviewing an advanced mathematics workbook. At eight years old, her academic aptitude was already staggering, but under Maxwell’s guidance, she was learning to enjoy learning rather than using it as a tool for basic survival.
Lily came running into the kitchen, carrying a large sketchpad covered in colorful charcoal drawings.
"Grandpa! Look!" Lily shouted enthusiastically, sliding the pad across the island. "I drew the new garden plan!"
Maxwell picked up the pad, looking at the vibrant illustration of the backyard, complete with a wooden treehouse, a swing set, and three bright yellow flower beds labeled Grandma Elizabeth’s Spot.
"This is extraordinary, Lily," Maxwell said, kissing the top of her copper head. "We’re bringing the carpenter over on Monday to build the treehouse exactly how you drew it."
"Can Barnaby sleep in the treehouse?" Lily asked, looking down at a fluffy golden retriever puppy napping near the refrigerator.
"Barnaby sleeps wherever he wants," Maxwell laughed, pouring a splash of maple syrup onto three plates of pancakes.
A soft knock came at the kitchen door.
Arthur Pendelton walked in, carrying a thin leather briefcase. He had traded his usual courtroom scowl for a relaxed smile as he took in the warm scene.
"Good morning, girls," Arthur greeted them gently.
"Good morning, Uncle Arthur!" both twins called out in unison.
Arthur set a single blue folder on the counter beside Maxwell. "The final decree from King County Family Court arrived this morning, Max. Full, permanent, unappealable adoption papers. They are officially Lily and Lucy Winters-Rothschild."
Maxwell picked up the folder, opening it to see the official seal of the court. His heart swelled with a profound, quiet peace that no business acquisition could ever duplicate.

"Thank you, Arthur," Maxwell said quietly, squeezing his old friend’s shoulder.
"They're good kids, Max," Arthur smiled, looking at the girls. "They saved you just as much as you saved them."
