Chapter 6 - The Waterfront Ambush

The private offices of Voss & Legal Partners sat at the end of Pier 56, a beautifully restored timber-and-glass structure that jutted out into the dark, churning waters of Elliott Bay. At 11:30 PM, the pier was deserted, the tourist shops and seafood restaurants long closed, leaving only the sound of waves crashing against the wooden pilings and the relentless rhythm of the Seattle rain.

Marcus walked through the glass entrance alone. The lobby was empty, the security desk unmanned, but the elevator was waiting, its doors open. He stepped inside and pressed the button for the top floor.

When the doors slid open, he walked into a massive, open-concept office with panoramic views of the dark harbor. Adrian Voss sat behind a sprawling minimalist desk, a sleek silver laptop open before him, flanked by a stack of thick legal documents. The Northline acquisition contracts.

"Marcus," Adrian said, standing up and offering a warm, professional smile that now looked entirely demonic to Marcus. "You had me worried today. Renee said it was a family emergency. I’m glad you could make it down here to finalize the Northline deal. The board was getting restless."

Marcus walked slowly across the room, his footsteps echoing on the polished hardwood. He didn't take the seat across from Adrian. He stood at the edge of the desk, looking down at the man he had trusted for fifteen years.

"Where are they, Marcus?" Adrian asked, his smile fading slightly when he realized Marcus had come alone. "The director told me you took the Callahan girl from your office. We need to return her to Haven Bridge before the authorities get involved. It’s a matter of liability for the firm."

"The Callahan girl has a name, Adrian," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Her name is Wren. And her brother’s name is Milo. They are my children."

Adrian let out a soft, dismissive chuckle, leaning back in his chair. "Marcus, don't let a sudden bout of romantic guilt cloud your judgment. Iris Callahan left you seven years ago. She’s gone. These kids are wards of the state. Even if they are yours biologically, you have no legal claim without a long, messy custody battle that will tank the Whitfield Harbor Group stock. Sign the Northline papers, let Haven Bridge handle the children, and we can manage a discreet trust fund for them later. That’s how these things are done."

"How these things are done?" Marcus repeated, his voice rising slightly, the dragon finally waking up. "You mean how you traffic children into wealthy international families to fund your private offshore accounts? I saw the property registry for the Ballard cottage, Adrian. I know you’ve been using Haven Bridge as a front for illegal adoptions for years. You targeted Iris because she was alone, because you thought no one would ever look for her kids."

Adrian’s face underwent a dramatic transformation. The smooth, polished corporate lawyer vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating criminal who had been backed into a corner. He reached under his desk and pressed a silent button.

The doors to the conference room behind Marcus opened, and three large men in dark coats stepped out—the same men Marcus had seen lurking near the pharmacy downtown. One of them held a heavy steel crowbar; another had his hand buried inside his jacket, suggesting a firearm.

"You should have signed the papers and stayed in your penthouse, Marcus," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a sinister whisper. "You’re a brilliant businessman, but you’re a terrible father. You weren't there when Iris died, and you won't be there to see these kids grow up. My men are going to take you out to the bay. A tragic boating accident during a late-night site inspection. The Northline deal will go through under your estate’s executors—which happen to be me."

The three men moved forward, closing the distance, their expressions cold and lethal. Marcus didn't flinch. He didn't step back. He simply reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a small black electronic key fob, and pressed the button.
