Chapter 5 - Shadows on the Waterfront

They brought Milo back to Marcus’s private estate in Madison Park under the cover of night. The property, a sprawling stone manor surrounded by high walls and security cameras overlooking Lake Washington, was the most secure private residence in the city.

The reunion between the siblings took place in the grand living room. The moment the door opened, Wren sprinted across the Persian rug, her bare feet flying, and threw herself into Milo’s arms. The two children crashed onto the floor in a heap of tears, laughter, and whispered reassurances that broke the hearts of every adult in the room.

Renee stood by the fireplace, wiping her eyes with a tissue, while Desmond Cole leaned against the doorway, a rare, soft smile playing on his rugged face.

Marcus watched them from the edge of the room, his hand holding a glass of scotch he hadn't touched. He felt a profound sense of peace, but it was a fragile peace. He knew the monsters were still outside his gates.

"Marcus," Desmond said, walking over and tapping his watch. "The boy is safe, but our window of opportunity is closing. My contacts inside the police department say Adrian Voss just filed an emergency motion in family court on behalf of Haven Bridge, alleging that an unknown individual has kidnapped a ward of the state from their custody. They’ve listed your name as the primary suspect."

Marcus didn't blink. "Let him file it. It brings the fight into the light."

"It’s not just a legal fight, Marcus," Desmond warned, his voice dropping. "Adrian isn't acting alone. Haven Bridge’s primary donor list includes some of your own major institutional investors—the people funding the Northline acquisition. If you destroy Haven Bridge, you destroy their reputation, and they will pull their capital out of Whitfield Harbor Group. They will ruin you commercially."

"Let them try," Marcus said, his eyes turning cold as winter ice. "They underestimated what I would do for my children. I want to see Adrian. Arrange a meeting tonight. Tell him I’m ready to sign the Northline paperwork, but I want it done at his private office on the waterfront. No assistants. Just him and me."

"Marcus, it’s a trap," Desmond said. "He’ll have Haven Bridge’s private security detail there to take the children back by force if necessary."

"He thinks I’m bringing the children," Marcus said, a dangerous smile spreading across his lips. "But I’m bringing you. And I’m bringing the federal prosecutor’s office."

Marcus walked over to the children, kneeling beside them. Wren looked up at him, her gold-flecked eyes now bright with a budding sense of security. Milo was holding his sister’s hand, his small face still pale but no longer terrified.

"Wren, Milo," Marcus said gently. "I have to go out for a little while to finish a big project. Renee is going to stay with you. You're safe here. Nobody can get past those gates. Do you trust me?"

Wren looked at him for a long moment, then reached into her pocket and pulled out the cracked plastic bracelet with the green beads. She pressed it into Marcus’s large palm.

"This was Mama’s," she whispered. "She said it keeps the bad dreams away. Take it with you."

Marcus closed his big hand around the tiny piece of plastic, feeling its rough edges press into his skin. He tucked it into the breast pocket of his jacket, right over his heart.

"Thank you, sweetheart," he said, kissing her forehead, then doing the same for Milo. "I’ll be back soon."

As he walked out the front door into the pouring rain, Desmond Cole stepped in beside him. The battle lines had been drawn. Marcus Whitfield was no longer fighting for profit margins or corporate dominance; he was fighting to tear down the corrupt machine that had tried to steal his children’s future.
