Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Six months later.
Spring had arrived in Detroit. The snow had melted, giving way to green parks, blooming cherry blossoms, and warm, sunny skies over the Detroit River.
At the base of Blackwood Tower, a massive crowd had gathered for a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. Local news cameras, community leaders, families, and city officials filled the newly renovated plaza.
Standing at the podium was Naomi Vance.
She looked radiant, confident, and stunning in a tailored cream-colored suit. Behind her sat Pearl, now eight years old, looking sharp in a blue dress, holding six-year-old Jonah’s hand as he happily waved to the crowd.
"Seven years ago," Naomi spoke into the microphone, her voice carrying clearly across the plaza, "I believed that this city was a place where vulnerable families were invisible. I believed that when hardship struck, there was no one coming to help."
She turned her head slightly, looking at Julian Blackwood, who stood near the side of the stage in a crisp navy suit, watching her with quiet pride.
"But I learned that even in the darkest, coldest nights," Naomi continued, her eyes shining with warmth, "there are people who hold the line. Today, we open the Vance-Blackwood Children's Foundation—a sanctuary dedicated to providing housing, legal protection, medical care, and education for every child and mother in need across this city."
The crowd broke into thunderous, overwhelming applause.
Naomi stepped back from the podium, picking up a pair of ceremonial gold scissors. She looked at Pearl and Jonah, extending her hand to them.
"Pearl, Jonah... come help me," Naomi smiled.
Pearl and Jonah walked up to the thick red ribbon stretching across the entrance of the new foundation building. Julian stepped forward as well, standing beside Naomi, placing his hand over hers as they cut the ribbon together.
SNIP.
The crowd cheered, flashbulbs erupted, and colorful confetti rained down over the plaza.
Jonah giggled, chasing the falling paper streamers, while Pearl looked up at Julian, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist.
Julian leaned down, lifting Pearl into his arms, holding her close as she rested her head against his shoulder.
"Are you happy, Pearl?" Julian asked softly.
May you like
Pearl looked at her mother, who was laughing as Jonah showed her a handful of blue confetti, then looked into Julian’s warm gray eyes.
"I'm not afraid anymore, Julian," Pearl whispered, her hazel eyes bright with pure joy. "We have a family now."
