Chapter 8 - The Warmth of Home

Midnight had passed by the time Julian returned to the penthouse of Blackwood Tower.

The city outside was quiet, the storm finally giving way to a clear, starry winter sky reflecting off the snow-covered rooftops of Detroit.

Julian stepped out of the elevator, taking off his heavy coat, handing it to Mrs. Gable, who greeted him with a warm, relieved smile.

"Is everyone alright?" Julian asked softly.

"They are fast asleep, Julian," Mrs. Gable replied gently. "Naomi stayed up until midnight waiting for your call, but I convinced her to rest. Pearl left something for you on your desk."

Julian walked quietly down the corridor into his private study.

The room was warm, smelling of old leather and polished wood. On his heavy mahogany desk, sitting beside his laptop, was a small, hand-drawn card made of colored construction paper.

Julian picked it up.

On the front of the card, drawn in bright crayon, was a picture of a tall black tower under a starry sky. Sitting on the steps were two small children, and standing beside them was a tall man in a dark coat, holding a large umbrella over their heads.

Inside the card, written in Pearl’s neat, careful handwriting, were five simple words:

Thank you for stopping, Julian.

Julian stared at the drawing for a long time.

He touched the crayon lines with his thumb, a deep, overwhelming emotion washing through him—a feeling he hadn't experienced in seven long years. The pain, the bitterness, the cold rage that had consumed his life since the loss of his wife and child seemed to lift, replaced by a profound, peaceful clarity.

The study door pushed open softly.

Naomi stood in the doorway, wearing a soft wool robe, her dark hair falling over her shoulders. She looked at him with warm, gentle hazel eyes.

"You came home," Naomi whispered softly.

Julian set the card down on his desk and walked over to her. "I will always come home, Naomi."

Naomi looked up into his face, seeing the peace in his gray eyes. She reached out, her hand resting gently against his cheek, her touch warm and tender.

"Thank you, Julian," Naomi murmured, her voice full of emotion. "For everything. For saving my babies... for saving me."

May you like

Julian covered her hand with his, leaning into her warm touch.

"You saved me first, Naomi," Julian whispered gently. "Seven years ago at Club Azure... and three weeks ago on those frozen steps."
