Chapter 7 - The Mexican Standoff

he air inside the warehouse froze. The only sounds were the heavy panting of Vance, the drip of water from the ceiling, and the faint hum of the distant city traffic.
Rachel kept her front sight focused on the tiny target presented by Vance’s exposed right eye behind Sarah’s head. Her hands were solid as steel, but inside, her mind was calculating every variable.
Distance: fifteen yards. Target size: three inches. Wind: negligible inside the warehouse. Victim's safety: compromised.
"It's over, Vance," Rachel said, her voice dropping into a low, commanding frequency designed to de-escalate panic while maintaining dominance. "SWAT has surrounded this entire terminal. The docks are blocked. The river is cut off. You step out of this building with her, and fifty snipers open fire."
"You're lying!" Vance screamed, his thumb pulling back the hammer of his revolver with a loud, sickening CLICK. "You came in here alone! I heard your radio die out at the gate!"
Sarah looked past the barrel of the gun directly at Rachel. Despite the blood on her face, she saw the police badge pinned to Rachel’s chest.
"Lily..." Sarah choked out through Vance’s chokehold. "Is... is my daughter..."
"Lily is safe, Sarah," Rachel said clearly, keeping her eyes locked on Vance. "She called 911. She saved Leo. Leo’s fever is down, and they are both warm, fed, and waiting for you at St. Jude’s."
Tears streamed through the dirt on Sarah’s cheeks. A soft, shuddering sigh released from her chest. "Thank God... oh, thank God..."
"Shut up!" Vance roared, shoving the gun deeper into her temple. "You think you two are getting a happy ending?! Nobody steals from me and walks away!"
"You didn't steal money, Vance," Rachel countered, taking half a step to her left to force Vance to adjust his footing, exposing slightly more of his shoulder. "You stole a mother from two babies. And the whole city knows it. Every news channel in the state is broadcasting your face right now. There is nowhere on this earth you can run where someone won't sell you out for the reward money."
Vance’s eyes flickered with a sudden, sharp seed of doubt. His grip on Sarah’s throat loosened by a fraction of an inch.
Now.
"Sarah! DROP!" Rachel yelled.
In an instant of absolute maternal instinct, Sarah didn't pull away; she collapsed her legs entirely, dropping her entire body weight straight down toward the concrete floor.
Vance’s sightline cleared for a fraction of a second.
BANG!
Rachel’s bullet struck Vance’s right shoulder blade with hydraulic force. His revolver discharged harmlessly into the ceiling as he recoiled backward, losing his balance and crashing over the iron safety railing into the deep, churning waters of the river below.
"Clear!" Rachel shouted, sprinting forward.
She swept past the kneeling henchman, kicking his weapon into the water, and slid on her knees beside Sarah. She quickly pulled out her tactical knife and sliced through the thick plastic zip-ties binding Sarah’s wrists.
"I've got you, Sarah! I've got you!" Rachel said, pulling the bruised mother into her arms.

Sarah clutched Rachel’s tactical vest, sobbing hysterically into her shoulder. "My babies... my sweet babies..."
Outside, the deafening roar of SWAT sirens and heavy tactical boots finally breached the terminal doors as bright spotlight beams sliced through the dark warehouse.
