Chapter 5 - The Clues in the Dust

Marcus Thorne ran every financial profile, security camera feed, and cell tower ping surrounding the Silver Diner over the last four hours.
"Rachel!" Marcus called through the radio, his voice crackling with high-voltage excitement. "I got a hit on a city traffic camera three blocks from the diner! At 3:12 a.m., a dark blue Ford F-150 registered to a shell company tied to Vance blew through a red light heading toward the old docklands."
"The abandoned river shipping terminal?" Rachel asked, running back up the basement stairs.
"Exactly," Marcus confirmed. "Terminal 4. It’s been shut down since the auto plant closed in 2012. But here's the catch—cell coverage out there is virtually nonexistent due to the concrete grain silos. If Vance has her inside, you won't have radio contact with Dispatch once you go deep inside the structure."
"I'm not waiting for SWAT, Marcus," Rachel declared, jumping into her squad car and slamming the engine into drive. "Vance knows the police are closing in. If he realizes Sarah hid that ledger somewhere he can't find it, he'll cut his losses."
"I'm dispatching SWAT to your location now, Brooks," Marcus said, his hands moving rapidly across his keys to route the emergency heavy tactical units. "ETA is twelve minutes. Do not enter that building alone!"
"I'll scout the perimeter," Rachel lied, her speedometer climbing past 70 mph down the rain-soaked industrial corridor.
Back at St. Jude’s Hospital, Officer Davis stood guard outside room 312. Inside, Lily was sitting up in bed, sipping chocolate milk through a straw while watching cartoons with Leo, whose fever had finally broken thanks to the hospital's IV treatment.
Inspector Sarah Chen from Child Protective Services sat in a chair beside the bed, filling out medical release forms.
"Lily, sweetheart," Inspector Chen said gently. "You've been so brave today. I spoke with your uncle David—your mother's brother who lives in Ohio. He’s on his way here right now."
Lily looked up from her chocolate milk, her little face serious. "Is my mom coming with Uncle David?"
Inspector Chen looked down at her papers, unable to make eye contact with the innocent child. "The police are working very hard to find her, sweetie."
Lily reached into the tiny pocket of her sweatpants and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper that had been tucked inside the prescription bag all along.
"Mom gave me this picture two weeks ago," Lily said, holding up a faded crayon drawing of a lighthouse sitting next to a big blue river. "She said if we ever got lost, we should look for the light on the river."
Inspector Chen paused, looking closely at the drawing. At the bottom, written in faint pencil in Sarah’s handwriting, was a latitude and longitude coordinate.

Chen immediately pulled out her phone and snapped a photo of the coordinates, sending it straight to Detective Miller's secure email.
"Officer Davis!" Chen called out. "Get this image to Officer Brooks right now! The mother left a location protocol with her daughter!"
