Chapter 10 - A Garden Full of Sunlight (Happily Ever After)

Two Years Later.

The smell of blooming jasmine and fresh pine filled the warm summer air in the quiet suburban town of Ann Arbor, thirty miles outside the city.

A charming two-story white house with blue shutters sat nestled behind a manicured lawn, complete with a wooden porch swing and a bright yellow garden shed.

Sarah Miller stood in the open kitchen, rolling out dough for fresh cinnamon rolls. Through the large bay window, she watched the backyard.

Eight-year-old Lily was sitting on a wooden bench beneath a towering oak tree, reading a storybook out loud to four-year-old Leo, who was giggling uncontrollably at the funny animal voices his sister was making.

A silver sedan pulled up the driveway, and Rachel Brooks—now a Detective in the Special Victims Unit—stepped out, carrying a large box of party favors. Behind her came Marcus Thorne, wearing a casual polo shirt, holding a giant box of ice cream cake.

"Party team has arrived!" Marcus shouted playfully as he walked up the porch steps.

"In the back!" Sarah called out with a joyful laugh, wiping flour from her hands and stepping outside to greet them.

Today was Lily’s ninth birthday.

The backyard was decorated with yellow unicorn balloons, gold banners, and a long wooden picnic table overflowing with presents, fresh fruit, and homemade lemonade.

Uncle David was there too, flipping burgers at the grill while his daughter Madison played tag with Leo and their new golden retriever puppy, Barnaby.

There were no locked doors. There were no chairs wedged under handles. There were no flickering lights, damp walls, or scary sounds in the night.

When it came time to blow out the candles, everyone gathered around the picnic table. The cake glowed with nine bright, warm flames, reflecting softly in Lily’s big, happy brown eyes.

"Make a wish, sweetie!" Sarah smiled, putting her arms around her daughter's shoulders from behind.

Lily looked around the table.

She saw her mom, healthy, happy, and free.

She saw her little brother, laughing with his face covered in ketchup.

She saw her Uncle David and cousin Madison, who lived just ten minutes down the road.

And she saw Detective Rachel and Marcus—the two guardians who had listened when the rest of the world had turned a deaf ear.

Lily didn't close her eyes to wish for anything new. She didn't need to. Everything she had ever prayed for in that dark, cold apartment was sitting right in front of her in the bright summer sunshine.

With a deep breath and a radiant, beautiful smile, Lily blew out every single candle in one strong breath.

The backyard erupted into cheers, applause, and laughter, filling the warm afternoon air with the sweetest sound on earth: the sound of a family fully healed, entirely safe, and forever home.
