It started exactly how Nathan predicted.
Not with apologies.
With lawyers.
Brent filed first.
A defamation claim.
A “false accusation of violence within a private family setting.”
Then my father followed.
A formal statement:
“Captain Nathan Hayes has exhibited unstable behavioral escalation patterns since returning from deployment.”
I stared at the document in disbelief.
“They’re attacking your mental state,” I whispered.
Nathan read it once.
Then set it down.
“Good,” he said.
I looked at him sharply. “Good?”
He nodded.
