Chapter 4 – Nathan’s Military Past Becomes a Weapon

We didn’t know it yet, but Brent had made a second mistake.
He had underestimated Nathan’s silence.
By the third day, Nathan’s military network had begun responding.
Not emotionally.
Structurally.
Former commanders.
Legal advisors.
A retired JAG officer who owed Nathan a favor.
I overheard part of a call.
“They’re trying to spin it as discipline,” Nathan said.
A pause.
Then:
“No. This is child assault.”
Another pause.
Then Nathan said something that made my stomach tighten:
“Yes, I want it handled quietly at first.”
He hung up and looked at me.
“They’re going to push back,” he said.
“How?”
Nathan’s expression darkened slightly.
“Money,” he said. “And reputation.”
I swallowed. “We don’t have that kind of power.”
