Chapter 2 – The Ashford Family Rewrite the Story

The first lie appeared before midnight.

Not from Brent.

From Evelyn Ashford.

A carefully worded message sent to the family group chat:

“A misunderstanding occurred tonight involving emotions running high. We hope everyone can reflect calmly.”

Caleb was asleep in the back bedroom of our house when I saw it.

Nathan stood at the kitchen counter, staring at his phone without blinking.

“They’re framing it already,” I whispered.

Nathan didn’t look up. “Of course they are.”

I turned to him. “They’re calling it a misunderstanding.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened slightly.

“No,” he said. “They’re testing how much truth they can erase.”

A second message came in.

Brent’s wife:

“Some children are difficult to discipline. It’s unfortunate when outsiders misinterpret family correction.”

My hands shook.

“Outsiders?” I repeated.

Nathan finally looked at me.

“That’s what we are to them,” he said quietly. “Now.”

Outside, snow continued falling like nothing had happened.

Inside, our son still had a red mark on his face.

And my family was already building a version of reality where he had deserved it.
