Six months later, Leo was off his medication and running in the park. He didn't ask about Grandma anymore. He had forgotten the disappointment of the hospital parking lot, replaced by the joy of our new life.
I had started my own consulting business, and it was taking off. I wasn't just "the widow who could be managed." I was a successful woman who had reclaimed her autonomy.

But then, I received a package. It was a letter from a prison inmate, forwarded to me by my lawyer. It was from Chloe. It wasn't an apology. It was a demand for me to "help her out" because she was struggling in her new circumstances.
I looked at the letter, then looked at Leo laughing in the garden. I realized that the only way to truly win was to stop giving them space in my head. I burned the letter. I didn't respond. Silence was the most expensive gift I could give them—a gift I was no longer interested in providing.
