The weeks that followed were a blur of legal motions and depositions. I discovered that for years, my mother had been using my information to take out small loans, building a mountain of debt that I was effectively paying off through my own accounts.
I cut them off completely. I sold the house that held too many memories of their manipulation and moved Leo to a quiet, secure apartment near his pediatric specialist. He thrived. Without the stress of “family obligations” and the constant drain on my resources, I found I had time—and money—to finally provide him with the best care possible.
The court case was brutal, but for the first time, I felt light. I wasn't carrying their burdens anymore. I saw them in the courthouse hallways—disheveled, angry, and diminished. They weren't powerful anymore; they were just two people who had spent their lives waiting for me to fail.
