Chapter 9 - Returning to the Light

Two weeks after the trial ended, the autumn sun shone bright and golden over the university campus.

The science building where the attack had occurred had been completely renovated. The old, dark alleyway had been cleared away, replaced by a beautiful, open-air marble courtyard filled with blooming flowers, stone benches, and bright street lanterns.

A large bronze plaque was dedicated at the center of the courtyard, engraved with the words: THE LILY WALKER FOUNDATION FOR STUDENT SAFETY AND JUSTICE.

Through a multi-million-dollar grant funded by the restored assets of the former Whitmore Private Equity firm, the foundation provided free legal aid, psychological support, and emergency housing for victims of campus violence across the nation.

I stood at the edge of the courtyard, watching Lily laugh as she chatted with a group of her fellow scholarship students. She carried her textbooks under her arm, looking vibrant, happy, and entirely unbroken.

A man stepped up beside me, leaning on a dark wooden walking stick.

It was Marcus, wearing a comfortable tweed jacket, sipping a cup of coffee from a nearby campus cafe.

"She looks great, Boss," Marcus said softly, looking over at Lily.

"She is great, Marcus," I smiled, watching her wave at us from across the lawn. "Better than I ever deserved."

"Vance left for London this morning," Marcus reported quietly. "And The Director flew back to Miami. The network has been dissolved again. Every drive wiped, every trace erased. The Ghost is dead."

I pulled my dark watch cap from my pocket, looking at it for a moment before tossing it into a nearby recycling bin.

"The Ghost was dead twenty years ago, Marcus," I said, turning to him with a genuine, peaceful smile. "I'm just Daniel Walker. A father."

Marcus smiled, holding out his hand. "It was an honor serving with you again, Daniel."

I shook his hand firmly. "Take care of yourself, Marcus."

Marcus nodded, turned, and slowly walked away down the leaf-strewn path, melting into the crowd of students, disappearing back into the quiet life he had built.
