Chapter 5 - The Senator's Downfall

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the news channels were in a absolute frenzy.

Live helicopter footage showed federal agents pouring over Pier 42, wheeling forty million dollars in seized illegal contraband out of Charles Cole’s shipping container. Charles Cole had been taken into federal custody in handcuffs, his mugshot broadcast across every major network in the country.

I sat in a private booth at a quiet diner two blocks from the state capital building, sipping black coffee.

Across from me sat The Director, looking over a morning newspaper with a contented smile.

"Phase one complete," The Director said, setting his coffee down. "Charles Cole’s bail has been set at ten million dollars, which he can't pay because Marcus froze his corporate liquidity accounts two hours ago. Now, what about the esteemed Senator Victoria Hale?"

"Victoria is currently in her office on the fourth floor," I said, checking my secure tablet. "She's trying to call the State Attorney General to quash the federal investigation into Cole."

Senator Victoria Hale was a master of political self-preservation. For twelve years, she had built her career on a platform of "law and order," while secretly accepting millions in dark-money campaign contributions routed through Jonathan Whitmore’s private equity firm.

More importantly, she was the person who had personally instructed the local police chief to suppress the initial investigation into Lily’s attack.

"Marcus," I spoke into my hidden lapel microphone. "Is the press package ready?"

"Ready and waiting, Boss," Marcus replied from the van outside. "I have compiled the audio recordings of Senator Hale calling Police Chief Gordon at 1:15 AM on the night of the assault, demanding that all campus footage near the science building be deleted."

"Broadcast it," I ordered.

"Where?" Marcus asked with a subtle smirk.

"Everywhere," I said. "State news networks, social media platforms, the university's internal portal, and directly to the inbox of every member of the state ethics committee."

At 8:30 AM, Senator Victoria Hale held an emergency press conference on the steps of the State Capitol building.

She wore a pristine white suit, surrounded by her staff and a wall of television cameras. She looked calm, poised, and utterly in control.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Senator Hale began, her voice ringing with practiced authority. "The recent rumors regarding my family and an unfortunate incident at the university are nothing more than a coordinated political hit job orchestrated by my opponents—"

Suddenly, every reporter’s smartphone in the crowd chimed simultaneously.

Journalists looked down at their screens. Notifications popped up across Twitter, news apps, and email client feeds.

A clear, high-definition audio recording began playing automatically through several reporters' speakerphones.

Senator Hale's voice: "Gordon, listen to me carefully. My son Brandon was involved in a minor scuffle at the science building. Some scholarship girl tried to make a scene. I want those campus security tapes wiped before sunrise, or I will ensure your department's budget is cut by thirty percent next quarter."

Chief Gordon's voice: "Senator, the girl's jaw is broken in six places. Her father is at the hospital—"

Senator Hale's voice: "I don't care if her neck is broken, Gordon! Pay the father off with the university fund and close the file!"

The crowd of reporters gasped in unison. Flashbulbs began exploding like lightning strikes.

Senator Hale’s face turned from polite confidence to total, horrified shock. She looked at her press secretary, who was staring at his phone in absolute terror.

"Senator!" a reporter shouted, thrusting a microphone into her face. "Is that your voice on that recording?!"

"Did you order Police Chief Gordon to cover up the brutal assault of a nineteen-year-old student?!" another news anchor yelled.

"This... this is an illegal AI fabrication!" Victoria Hale stammered, stepping back toward the Capitol doors as her security team tried to push the surging crowd of journalists away. "This is fake!"

At that exact moment, four black SUVs marked with the seals of the State Attorney General's Special Investigations Unit pulled up to the curb.

Senior Investigator Karen Vance—a fierce, uncorruptible prosecutor—stepped out, holding a rolled-up document. She walked briskly up the marble steps, pushing past the media, and stopped right in front of Victoria Hale.

"Senator Victoria Hale," Prosecutor Vance announced in a voice that rang across the plaza. "You are under arrest for felony obstruction of justice, witness intimidation, official misconduct, and conspiracy to commit extortion."

"You can't arrest me!" Hale shrieked, her regal composure shattering completely as steel handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. "Do you have any idea who I am?!"

"Yes, ma'am," Prosecutor Vance replied coldly, leading her down the steps toward the waiting police car in full view of fifty live news cameras. "You're a criminal."

Across the street, inside the quiet diner, I took a slow sip of my black coffee.

"That's two," The Director said softly, marking a red line through Senator Hale's photograph in his folder. "Now... for the crown jewel. Jonathan Whitmore."
