Chapter 8 - The Dawn of a New Day

One month later.
The dark, stormy weather that had plagued Long Island for weeks had completely cleared, replaced by bright, golden autumn sunshine.
The Rossi estate had undergone a quiet, profound transformation.
The dark velvet curtains that had kept the mansion plunged in shadow since Sophia’s death were pulled back wide, allowing warm light to flood the marble halls. The oil paintings of old mafia dons were replaced with bright landscapes and family photographs.
On the grand lawn overlooking the ocean, a white wooden playpen was set up near a blooming rose garden.
Three-month-old Leo Rossi lay on a plush blanket inside the playpen, kicking his chubby legs happily in the warm air. He had gained four pounds in thirty days. His cheeks were round and rosy, his eyes bright and alert, filled with health and life.
Sitting on the grass beside the playpen was Hunter.
She wore a simple, elegant yellow sundress, her hair tied back in a loose braid. She was reading a children's book, laughing softly as Leo reached his tiny hands out to grab the colorful pages.
A set of footsteps sounded on the stone patio.
Lorenzo walked out onto the lawn. He was dressed in a dark blue linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, carrying a silver tray with two glasses of fresh lemonade.
He set the tray down on a small garden table and sat on the grass beside Hunter.
"How is the young prince doing today?" Lorenzo asked, leaning over to kiss Leo’s forehead.
"He ate six ounces this morning," Hunter smiled proudly. "The doctor says his growth milestones are completely back on track."
Lorenzo looked at Hunter. The dark shadows beneath her eyes were gone. Her skin was glowing, her hazel eyes bright with peace and happiness.
"I received a letter from my lawyers this morning," Lorenzo said, pulling an official legal document from his pocket.
Hunter turned her head, looking at him curiously. "What is it?"
Lorenzo handed her the document.
Hunter opened it. As her eyes scanned the top line, her breath caught in her throat.
It was a legal petition filed with the New York State Family Court.
IN THE MATTER OF THE FORMAL ADOPTION OF LEO LORENZO ROSSI... HUNTER HIGGINS TO BE RECOGNIZED AS LEGAL MOTHER AND EQUAL GUARDIAN.
Tears instantly gathered in Hunter’s eyes, obscuring the black ink on the page. She looked up at Lorenzo, her lips trembling.
"Lorenzo... I don't know what to say," she whispered.
"You don't have to say anything," Lorenzo said gently, taking her hand into his big, warm palm. "For two months, I thought my life ended in that burning car with Sophia. I thought I was just waiting for a bullet to take me, too."
He squeezed her hand softly, looking into her eyes with deep, sincere emotion.
"You didn't just save Leo's life, Hunter," Lorenzo confessed, his voice thick with feeling. "You saved mine. You gave this house a heart again."
Hunter wiped a tear from her cheek, smiling through her tears. "I lost my baby girl, Lorenzo. I thought my heart was dead forever. But when I held Leo... I realized God didn't give me a chance to be Lily's mother, but He gave me a chance to be his."

Leo let out a loud, joyous laugh from the playpen, waving his small hands in the air.
Lorenzo laughed—a deep, genuine sound that echoed across the quiet cliffside. He reached out, pulling Hunter into a warm, fierce embrace, kissing her temple as the warm ocean breeze blew across the lawn.
