Chapter 9 - THE UNBROKEN BOND

Five years later.

The Swiss autumn was in full bloom. The leaves on the trees surrounding the Zurich estate had turned brilliant shades of crimson, gold, and deep amber.

Lucia Reyes, now fifteen years old, stood near the edge of the lake, sketching the mountains in a large leather sketchbook. She was tall, graceful, and possessed an aura of quiet intelligence and composure that commanded respect wherever she went.

A gentle splash sounded from the shallow water near the dock.

Seven-year-old Leo Falcone was splashing around in bright red rain boots, holding a small wooden sailboat that Marcus had carved for him during his last visit.

"Leo! Don't go too deep!" Lucia called out smoothly without taking her eyes off her sketch.

"I'm fine, Lucia!" Leo laughed, running back up the wooden dock, his bright blue eyes flashing with energy. He dropped onto the bench beside her, leaning his head against her arm. "Show me what you drew!"

Lucia smiled, turning the sketchbook toward him.

It was a detailed, beautiful graphite drawing of the old dining room at the Falcone mansion—not as a dark, scary room, but filled with bright sunlight, with an eight-year-old girl holding a small, wrapped newborn baby in her arms.

Leo ran his chubby finger over the sketch. "Is that me?"

"That’s you," Lucia replied softly, patting his messy dark hair. "The day I found you."

Leo looked up at her with profound, innocent love. "Uncle Marcus told me the story last night before bed. He said if you hadn't come to the kitchen bin that night, I wouldn't be here."

"God brought us together that night, Leo," Lucia said, wrapping her arm around his small shoulders. "So we could take care of each other forever."

A car engine hummed up the driveway.

Marcus, now sixty-one, stepped out of the vehicle alongside Marisol and Elena. He walked down the stone path toward the lake, holding two cups of warm cocoa.

"Taking a break from your art, Lucia?" Marcus asked, handing her a cup.

"Just finishing a sketch for Leo, Uncle Marcus," she replied warmly.

Marcus sat down on the bench beside them, looking out over the peaceful lake. The winter of fear, betrayal, and violence was far behind them now. The Falcone name was clean, their legacy was honorable, and the children were safe, strong, and loved.

"You know, Lucia," Marcus said softly, looking at the bright, confident young woman beside him. "The university in Geneva called me yesterday. They received your early admission application for their International Law program."

Lucia smiled shyly. "Do you think I'm ready?"

May you like

Marcus reached out, placing his large, warm hand over hers, his eyes shining with eternal pride.

"You were ready when you were eight years old, my dear," Marcus whispered. "You're going to change the world."
