Chapter 3 - THE DEBT OF HONOR

By four o'clock in the morning, the Falcone mansion had transformed into a fortress under siege.
Dozens of black SUVs were parked along the perimeter drive, their engines idling. Over thirty heavily armed men in dark suits stood guard along the property fences, while high-tech mobile medical units occupied the rear courtyard.
Inside the master suite on the second floor, Dr. Rossi and three private nurses worked quietly around a state-of-the-art hospital bed. Elena was on an IV drip, her breathing stable, sleeping deeply under heavy sedation. In a heated bassinet beside her lay the newborn baby boy, bathed, fed, and wrapped in clean, soft white cotton.
Downstairs in the private library, a fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace.
Lucia Reyes sat on a oversized leather armchair, her feet dangling several inches above the floor. She was wearing a soft, clean oversized sweatshirt that belonged to one of the housekeepers, drinking a cup of warm milk with honey. Beside her, her mother Marisol sat on the edge of a chair, holding her daughter's shoulder as if afraid she might disappear.
The heavy oak door opened, and Marcus Falcone walked in.
He had changed out of his suit into a simple black sweater and trousers. The cold, murderous aura that usually surrounded him was gone, replaced by an immense, weary gravity.
Marisol instantly stood up, pulling Lucia with her, bowing her head. "Mr. Falcone... please. If we made a mistake... if we disturbed the house..."
Marcus raised a hand, stopping her mid-sentence. "Sit down, Marisol."
Marisol hesitated, then slowly sat back down, keeping Lucia close to her side.
Marcus walked over to the fire, standing with his back to the flames for a moment before turning to face them. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet pouch, placing it on the low table between them.
"Marisol," Marcus began, his voice calm and deliberate. "For four years, you have worked in this house. You have cleaned my floors, prepared my meals, and stayed silent about things you were not meant to see."
"I have always been loyal, sir," Marisol whispered, her eyes wide with apprehension.
"I know you have," Marcus said. "And tonight, your daughter did something that no lieutenant, no lawyer, and no security system in my empire could do. She saved the lives of my sister and my nephew."
He looked directly at Lucia. The little girl met his gaze without flinching, taking a small sip of her warm milk.
"Lucia," Marcus said. "Why didn't you walk away when you heard the baby crying?"
Lucia set her cup down on the wooden saucer with a soft click. "My mother taught me that if you hear someone crying and you pretend you didn't, you carry a piece of their pain with you forever. And... I saw the blanket. It was too pretty for the trash."
A faint, rare smile touched the corners of Marcus’s hard mouth. "You have more courage than most grown men I employ, little one."
He leaned forward, placing his hands on his knees. "Isabella Cross will never step foot near this house again. But she was not working alone."
Marisol paled. "What do you mean, sir?"
"A scheme of this size—hiding a pregnant woman in my own house for six months, faking hospital records at St. Agnes, preparing a black-market transport—requires money and connections outside this estate," Marcus explained grimly. "Isabella had co-conspirators. Likely within rival families who wanted to use my sister's child to blackmail me, or within my own organization."
Marcus stood up, taking a official-looking document from the mantlepiece.
"This house is no longer safe for a child," Marcus declared. "Starting tomorrow morning, Marisol, you and Lucia are being relocated."
Marisol’s heart dropped. Tears welled in her eyes. "Mr. Falcone... please don't turn us out into the street. We have nowhere to go..."
"You misunderstand me, Marisol," Marcus interrupted smoothly. "You are not being turned out. You are being protected."
He slid the document across the table.
"This is the deed to a private, gated estate in Switzerland, three miles outside Zurich. It comes with a permanent annuity of two million dollars a year, fully funded by my personal trust. There is a private school waiting for Lucia, full security staff, and complete diplomatic immunity."
Marisol stared at the paper as if it were written in a foreign language. Her hands shook violently as she read the numbers. "Two... two million... sir, this is too much! We are simple people!"
"It is not enough," Marcus said firmly. "You saved the future of the Falcone bloodline. Money is the easiest thing I can give you."
He turned back to Lucia. "However, before I send you to Switzerland, I need one more favor from you, Lucia."
Lucia sat up straighter. "What favor, Sir?"
Marcus leaned down until he was at eye level with the eight-year-old. "The doctor who delivered the baby in the basement... the man who helped Isabella take him away. Isabella called him by a name, didn't she? When you were hiding near the pantry, you heard them talking before she threw the baby in the bin."
Lucia froze. She closed her eyes, her brow furrowing as she remembered the rainy dark alley behind the kitchen door, the muffled voices under the umbrella.
"She called him... Dr. Julian," Lucia recalled slowly. "And she said... 'Tell Don Victor the child is taken care of.'"
The room temperature seemed to drop to absolute zero.
Don Victor.
Victor Moretti. The supreme patriarch of the Moretti crime syndicate—Marcus Falcone’s oldest and most ruthless enemy.
Marcus stood up slowly, his grey eyes flashing with a terrifying, predatory light. The final piece of the puzzle had fallen into place. Isabella wasn't just acting out of greed or jealousy; she was an embedded asset working for the Moretti family, designed to tear the Falcone empire apart from the inside.
"Dr. Julian... Don Victor," Marcus repeated softly, a terrible, dark promise in his tone.
He looked back down at Lucia and placed his hand gently on her head. "Thank you, Lucia. You have given me everything I need."
He looked at Marisol. "My private jet is waiting at the airfield. Mateo will escort you both to the airport within the hour. You will be safe in Zurich before sunset."

Lucia looked up at the powerful crime boss. "Will the baby be okay, Mr. Falcone?"
"His name is Leo," Marcus replied softly, his face softening with genuine warmth. "And yes, Lucia. Because of you, Leo will grow up strong. And one day, when he is old enough, I will tell him the story of the brave little girl who rescued him from the dark."
