Chapter 2 - THE DUNGEON OF SILENCE

The air inside the lower levels of the Falcone mansion changed instantly. The warm, cedar-scented atmosphere of the upper living quarters gave way to cold, damp concrete, old stone, and the sharp, metallic tang of rust and damp earth.
Marcus walked down the spiral stone staircase, his heavy tactical boots striking the steps with rhythmic precision. Behind him, Mateo and six guards moved in tight tactical formation, their assault rifles raised, flashlight beams cutting through the gloom.
Isabella was being dragged down the steps behind them by two guards, her silk robe torn at the hem, her frantic weeping echoing off the cold stone walls.
"Marcus, please! She’s crazy! Elena is sick in the head! She was going to ruin the family!" Isabella babbled, her polished veneer completely destroyed.
At the bottom of the stairs lay the historic wine cellar—a labyrinth of stone arches constructed in the early 1920s. At the far end of the corridor stood a reinforced steel security door, an addition Marcus had installed ten years ago as a fallout shelter.
The heavy steel door was slightly ajar. A thin strip of yellow light spilled out onto the wet floor.
Marcus felt a cold hand wrap around his heart. He pushed past his guards and slammed the door open with his boot.
The room inside was small, windowless, and freezing. A single bare bulb hung from a frayed wire on the ceiling. On a narrow iron cot against the damp stone wall lay a woman.
She was terribly thin, her dark hair matted with sweat and dust, her skin as pale as wax. Her clothes—a faded hospital gown—were stained with dried blood. She was shivering uncontrollably under a threadbare blanket, her eyes wide with hollow, exhausted terror as the bright tactical lights flooded the room.
"Marcus...?" a voice rasped from the cot. It was barely a whisper, dry and cracked like dry leaves.
Marcus dropped his weapon to his side. The ruthless mafia boss, a man who had faced down federal indictments, rival gang wars, and assassination attempts without flinching, fell to his knees beside the iron cot.
"Elena..." Marcus breathed, his voice cracking as he reached out with trembling hands to touch his sister’s cold face. "Oh God... Elena..."
"Marcus..." Elena gasped, tears pouring from her sunken eyes as she reached out with thin, bruised arms to clutch at her brother's suit lapels. "My baby... where is my baby? Did she... did she take him?!"
"He’s safe, Elena," Marcus soothed her, pulling his heavy coat off his shoulders and wrapping it tightly around her shivering frame. "He’s safe. Mateo has him upstairs. He’s alive."
Elena let out a long, ragged sob, collapsing against her brother’s chest. "She took him... ten minutes after he was born... she brought a doctor down here... they cut the cord... and she took him away... she said he was going to be thrown in the river... she said you ordered it..."
Marcus froze. He looked over his shoulder at Isabella, who was being held by two guards at the doorway.
"I told her... you wanted him dead..." Elena wept into his shirt. "She said... she said you found out the father was a Moretti... and that you would kill any child with Moretti blood..."
Marcus slowly stood up. The grief on his face instantly hardened into something ancient and terrifying.
He walked out of the cell and approached Isabella. He didn't raise his hand. He didn't yell. He simply stood six inches away from her, staring into her eyes.
"Why?" Marcus asked quietly.
Isabella swallowed hard, her eyes darting between the armed guards surrounding her. Seeing no escape, a dark, bitter malice filled her expression. She stopped crying and straightened her posture, her eyes flashing with venom.
"Why?!" Isabella spat, wiping blood from her lip. "Because you were going to give everything to her! Your wife died and left you with no heirs! I was supposed to give you a son, Marcus! I was supposed to be the queen of the Falcone empire!"
She stepped toward him, her voice dripping with rage. "And then your pathetic, stupid sister comes running back six months ago, pregnant by a Moretti lieutenant! She came to me first, begging for help! And what did I realize? If she had a boy... a real Falcone grandson... you would soft-hearted enough to forgive her! You would name that bastard child your heir!"
"So you locked her down here," Marcus stated.
"I kept her alive!" Isabella laughed hysterically. "I could have killed her months ago! But I needed the baby born first. I was going to sell the child to a black-market adoption ring in South America and tell you Elena died in childbirth in Europe! But the delivery came early tonight... the doctor panicked... and I had to get rid of the child immediately before your shift guards rotated!"
"So you threw him in the trash," Marcus whispered. "Like garbage."
"He is garbage!" Isabella screamed. "He’s a Moretti bastard! He doesn't belong in this house!"
Marcus turned to Mateo.
"Call Dr. Rossi. Have him bring a full medical transport team to the mansion immediately. Elena needs an ICU bed, blood transfusions, and round-the-clock security. If a single detail of her condition leaks to the outside, I will skin Rossi alive."
"Understood, Boss," Mateo replied, already pulling out his satellite phone.
"And her?" Mateo gestured to Isabella.
Marcus looked at Isabella one last time. There was no hatred in his eyes—only an absolute, terrifying void.
"Take her to the secondary holding facility at the docks," Marcus ordered coldly. "Put her in the cell under the tide line. Let her sit in the dark until I decide how she dies."
"No! Marcus! You can't do this to me!" Isabella shrieked as the two guards grabbed her under the arms and began dragging her back up the stone stairs, her nails scraping uselessly against the concrete walls. "Marcus! I loved you! Marcus!"
Her screams faded into the depths of the mansion.
Marcus turned back into the cold room, picking up his weak, trembling sister in his arms. As he carried her up the stairs toward the light, he kept thinking of the eight-year-old girl standing in his dining room with dirt on her knees and a baby in her arms.

Without Lucia, his sister would have starved to death in a basement, and his nephew would be rotting at the bottom of a city landfill.
The Falcone family owed a debt. And Marcus Falcone always paid his debts.
