Chapter 8 - The Collateral Damage

The news broke across financial networks by 2:00 PM.

THORNE GLOBAL CFO ARRESTED IN $3M DEFENSE FRAUD SCANDAL; SHARE PRICES PLUMMET 40% BEFORE TRADING HALT.

In the living room of the Arlington townhouse, the television was blasting the news report.

My mother sat on the sofa, staring at the screen in complete, silent horror. Chloe was curled up on the rug, sobbing hysterically into her phone as Marcus’s lawyer continuously sent her calls directly to voicemail.

My father sat at the dining table, surrounded by piles of unpaid luxury credit card statements, lease agreements, and tuition invoices that had suddenly defaulted following the cancellation of my primary bank accounts.

"It's gone," Jonathan Marsh whispered, staring at his hands. "Everything is gone."

"Call her again, Mom!" Chloe shrieked from the floor, throwing her phone against the sofa cushion. "Make her fix it! She can drop the charges! She works for the government!"

"She's not picking up, Chloe!" my mother cried out, her voice cracked with despair. "She changed her number! The building manager said her lawyer came by two hours ago and served us with a formal eviction notice!"

The front door opened.

Lily, my eighteen-year-old cousin, walked in carrying a small duffel bag. She didn't look at her aunt, nor did she look at Chloe. She walked straight to the guest room, packed her books and clothes, and walked back toward the door.

"Where do you think you're going?!" Chloe snapped, wiping her tear-stained face.

Lily stopped near the foyer, looking at her family with a clarity that had been absent for years. "I'm going to stay with Zariah at her hotel."

"With Zariah?!" my mother gasped. "After what she did to us?! She destroyed your sister's life!"

"No, Aunt Eleanor," Lily said firmly, her young voice strong and clear. "Marcus destroyed his own life because he was a criminal. And you destroyed yours because you treated the only person who actually protected you like trash."

"Lily, you stay right here!" my father ordered, standing up from the table.

Lily pulled an envelope from her pocket and set it on the console table by the door. "Zariah paid my college tuition directly to the university yesterday morning for the entire four years. She put it in a private trust so none of you could touch it."

My mother’s jaw dropped.

"She always took care of us," Lily said softly, her eyes glistening with tears. "You just never noticed until she stopped."

Lily turned, opened the door, and walked out, closing it firmly behind her.
