Chapter 7 - The Raid on Thorne Global

By 10:00 AM, the sky over Midtown Manhattan and Northern Virginia had turned a bruised, metallic gray as heavy storm clouds rolled in from the coast.
At the corporate headquarters of Thorne Global Logistics in Tysons Corner, Virginia, the marble lobby was silent save for the quiet hum of the air conditioning and the rhythmic clatter of brass-rimmed glass doors.
Marcus Thorne sat behind his massive mahogany desk on the forty-second floor, staring at three black screens on his computer terminal. His access to the primary financial servers had been severed at 08:30.
"What do you mean the accounts are locked?!" Marcus roared into his phone at his head accountant. "Override it! Use the master key!"
"I can't, Marcus!" the accountant’s panicked voice crackled back. "The Department of Defense logistics network just issued a blanket freeze on all third-party transport disbursements connected to Apex Maritime! Federal marshals are in the lobby right now!"
Marcus dropped the receiver. His hands were shaking violently. He stood up, knocking his leather chair backward, and ran to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the parking structure.
Four dark blue federal suburbans were parked sideways across the executive entrance. Agents in windbreakers bearing the letters DLA-CID and FBI were stepping out, carrying steel evidence cases.
Marcus bolted for his private executive elevator keycard.
When the elevator doors slid open on his floor, he didn't see security guards.
He saw me.
I was wearing my crisp, dark blue Army Service Uniform. The gold Major’s leaves gleamed on my shoulders. The silver stars and campaign ribbons on my chest caught the bright LED lights of the hallway. Beside me stood Ethan Thorne, wearing a dark suit, holding a leather folder of board resolutions.
Behind us stood four armed federal agents.
Marcus froze, his face turning the color of chalk. "Ethan... what is this? What did you do?!"
Ethan stepped forward, his expression cold, unyielding, and totally devoid of familial warmth. "I didn't do anything, Marcus. You did. I just called the board and presented the evidence of your embezzlement."
"You betrayed your own brother?!" Marcus screamed, his voice cracking into a high pitch. He pointed a trembling finger at me. "For her?! A broken soldier who lives off handouts?!"
I walked forward, my polished brass-buckled low-quarters clicking rhythmically against the marble floor.
"You're under arrest, Mr. Thorne," the lead FBI agent stepped past me, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"Get your hands off me!" Marcus thrashed as the agent grabbed his arm, forcing him forward against his own mahogany desk. "Father! Where is my father?!"
"Your father is currently being interviewed by the Securities and Exchange Commission in room 402," Ethan said smoothly, stepping into Marcus’s line of sight. "He’s currently signing over his voting proxy to me in exchange for non-prosecution on corporate oversight negligence."
Marcus looked at his brother, realization dawning on him like a bucket of ice water. "You planned this... you let me dig myself in..."
"I warned you three years ago to stop stealing from our government contracts, Marcus," Ethan said softly. "You thought you were invincible because of our name. You forgot that our name only matters if the company survives."
As the agents pulled Marcus toward the elevator, he looked at me, his eyes wide with a pathetic, desperate terror. "Zariah... please... tell them it was a mistake... Chloe... Chloe loves me! Think about your sister!"
I looked at him, my expression impassive.

"My sister loved your money, Marcus," I said quietly. "And you loved my influence. You were perfect for each other."
The elevator doors closed, sealing Marcus inside with the federal agents.
