Chapter 3 - The Offer on the Road

The iron gates of the Thorne estate were half a mile from the main house, winding through a dense canopy of old-growth oaks and manicured boxwood hedges. The night was dark, save for the low landscape lighting casting long shadows across the driveway.

I walked at a steady, rhythmic pace, my mind already executing the transition protocols I had used after a hundred tactical operations: compartmentalize the emotion, assess the terrain, establish the next objective.

"Major Marsh," Ethan’s voice called out from twenty yards behind me.

I stopped, turning smoothly to face him. He had taken off his suit jacket, carrying it over one arm, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He walked with the effortless confidence of a man who didn't need to yell to make himself heard.

"You left your shoes," Ethan said, holding up my black pumps by their thin straps.

I looked at the shoes, then up at his face. "Leave them by the gate, Mr. Thorne. I prefer walking without them tonight."

"Fair enough," Ethan said. He set the shoes neatly on a flat stone pillar near the driveway entrance. "And please, call me Ethan. 'Mr. Thorne' currently carries a rather unpleasant connotation tonight."

"Your family has a severe discipline problem, Ethan," I said, resuming my walk toward the main road.

"My father has a discipline problem," Ethan corrected, matching my stride effortlessly. "He’s spent thirty years enabling Marcus because Marcus tells him what he wants to hear. My brother is a hollow suit with an inflated title. I’ve spent the last three years trying to keep Thorne Global from collapsing under his sheer incompetence."

"Then you should have let him fail earlier," I noted.

"I tried," Ethan said, a dry, self-deprecating smile touching his lips. "But family loyalty is a persistent disease. I imagine you know something about that."

I slowed my pace slightly, looking at him sideways. "What do you want, Ethan?"

Ethan stopped beneath the glow of a streetlamp near the outer gate. His eyes grew serious. "I want to apologize for what happened back there. Not just as a Thorne, but as the man who actually runs the company my brother almost ruined tonight. What Marcus did was despicable. What your family did was worse."

"My family made their choices," I said coldly. "And now they get to live with the consequences."

"They won't like those consequences," Ethan said. "Marcus’s entire identity is tied to the contract your office is reviewing. If Thorne Global loses that procurement bid, my father will be forced to restructure, and Marcus’s position as CFO will be eliminated by the independent board."

"Is that a plea for leniency?" I asked, my voice dropping into a dangerous key.

"God, no," Ethan laughed, a genuine, rich sound that surprised me. "It’s an invitation. I’ve been trying to remove Marcus and my father’s old-guard cronies from the board for two years. They’re corrupt, they’re bloated, and they treat our subcontractors like dirt. Your audit is the hammer I’ve been waiting for."

I studied him closely. "You want me to destroy your brother's career?"

"I want you to do your job with the exact same ruthless integrity you showed back on that lawn," Ethan replied stepping closer, his gray eyes steady. "I know who you are, Zariah. I didn't need Dr. Vance to tell me about your service. I read the DLA compliance reports six months ago when your appointment was announced. I knew who you were the moment you walked onto the patio."

I narrowed my eyes. "And you didn't tell Marcus?"

"I told Marcus to be polite to you," Ethan said softly. "He chose to throw wine instead. He made his bed. I’m just making sure he lies in it."

Before I could answer, headlights cut through the darkness of the driveway. A black SUV accelerated toward us, gravel spraying from its tires as it screeched to a halt near the gate.

The driver’s side door slammed open, and my father stepped out, his face pale and distorted by desperation.

"Zariah!" he shouted, stumbling toward us. "You get back in the car right now! We are going back inside, and you are going to fix this with Robert before the board members leave!"
